Motor doesn't want to start!
« on: May 05, 2014, 08:14:48 PM »
I have a 460 motor and I haven't messed with it much sense October and I'm trying to get it fired up and its start to fire up and then back fires.
So I cleaned the old gas out and cleaned the carb checked the plugs and wires they seemed fine. I'm thinking it's a timing issue but when it comes to timing I'm about useless. Also I just went to give it another shot and and I noticed the carb is now leaking pretty bad I'm guessing it might be from it back firing because it wasn't doing it before
Thanks Alex.

Is there a reason the timing changed.  Fuel and fire one of those is most likely the issue.  When u say u cleaned the carb exactly what did u do?

I cleaned out the jets and pulled the bowls off and cleaned them and I haven't changed I haven't touched the timing at all and nothing could have hit it hard enough to move it

Do you have good spark while cranking?

Also, just a safety tip, as soon as you said dripping gas. Have the fire extinguisher at the ready.... Don't ask... :-\

Got a neighbor kid you dislike?   >:D

Get an old spark plug and a pair of vice grips and clamp the plug to a known good ground and attach the coil wire to the plug, give it a quick whirl... Should be a noisy , bright blue arc.

Honestly it sounds like it was flooding because of a stuck needle/seat.

Okay well I just pulled the plugs for shits and giggles and they don't look fouled out but there pretty black for bing new plugs and so I'm going to throw my extra set in just for peace of mind. And next question now is where's a good place to have the carb rebuilt near Rancho Cucamonga sense this thing is leaking like crazy

Gt just said what I said last my bad...

Ur needle stops the fuel from entering ur bowl.  But if u dont feel like trying to lean to tinker on it thats ok.

How long was the carb sitting and u said it was on an old motor that blew up

I love to tinker and I want to learn. And it's sat from October until a few weeks ago and the fuel that say I'm it was really bad when I flushed it

funny story, I was about 5...lawnmower wouldn't start.  My dad pulled the plug, stuck it back in the non insulated terminal on the wire, and told me to hold it against the block while he pulled the cord.  Mom wasn't thrilled with the words that came outta my mouth that day.  I got him back though...an HEI makes a few more kV than a Tecumseh.

I had a similar issue on a 460. Would try to fire, but kept backfiring thru the carb. The roll pin on the distributor drive gear was half sheared off.

Could be the distributor is rusted on the inside and stuck in the advanced position!

Could be a few things but the fact that u had old gas and the carb leaks Im pretty sure ur gonna have the fuel issue.

Kinda carb u got is it a holley? Do u have a electric fuel pump? If u do easy  Pull the inspection screw off with some rags under neath with a cool motor NOT HOT.  If the center hung float is right itll be at the top of the hole or maybe just spill out.  That is more or less what u wanna see if the bowl is over full u need to adjust the float level or gunk is blocking the float tip and not allowing the float needle to do its job.
So in essence see if the float needle is clean and while carb is flat/level make sure float height is set properly
