crap in fuel filters

I pulled off my fuel filters and found a lot of crap when i tapped it on one end too see what was the oming out. A lot of crap came out. Its greenish in color and looks like sand but when it i squeeze it, it disintegrates into a fine powder. What is this stuff coming out of my fuel tanks? If i just change my filters often will this stuff eventually be filtered out? Are my tanks dissolving from inside out? They are aluminum tanks.

Corroded aluminum looks like baking soda...What you are seeing is remnants of the additives in pump gas after it has been exposed to evaporation and moisture...

Personally I would not have issue with it, it was in the filter, which would leave me to believe that the filter was doing its job....keep a spare in the tool box and let her buck...

One of the best investments you can make on a boat (any boat) is a water separating fuel filter, I use the Fram HPG 1

I also have Raycor filters in the other boats....

I had the same problem. After 3 packed sierra fuel filters of crud I took the boat to a marina to have the tanks cleaned. They were naaaaaaasty.

My tanks ar glassed in. The last thing i want to do is remove them. MAYBE i'll tackle it over the winter. After all, its the only issue I've had that has stopped a nice day of boating. Clogged filters=no fuel. Boats are thirsty.

I'm having the same issue as well. Last sunday I took my boat out and on the way back to the ramp it coughed and died then started up again after about a minute. When I got home I inspected the filter and it was nasty looking. I found sediment, metal shavings and facial hair. My tanks are glassed in & taking them out is not an option. My plan is to dump 2 gallons of acetone in each tank and pull the boat around the block a few times and then suck it all out. Keeping my fingers crossed that this works.

thats not a good idea! and i will prob get a few people to argue against me but heres why not (my oppion) with taking them out and boiling them all the acetone will do is loosin all that crap up not remove it all so your basically going to make it worse! leave it alone till you can fix it right.

i would say in the off season unhook the fuel line and rise it out with what ever you got. keep it open so that it drys out and then put fuel back in it.

its just a gas tank not a flux capacitor.

just make sure its clean and dry when you hook the fuel lines back up and put gas in it.

I cleaned out an old buggy tank with just a hose. worked great.

i came across this post cause i had this samething this weekend, is there anybody that has found a fix to fiberglass tanks coming apart inside, besides putting in aluminum tanks in?

you need to make putting alum tanks in your boat a priority. if you're gumming up filters, you're also gumming up your fuel lines, carb, and engine. your tanks are literally disintegrating and eventually you'll have a fuel leak and possibly a fire. fiberglass tanks cant stand up to todays fuel.

No on the new tanks. Dude on here sold me some 9 gallon bullet tanks with straps for $200. I posted in the wanted/classified section. He hit me up. Cut out the tanks in a few hours, cleaned the hull up and ground down the rest of the fiberglass tabs and installed wooden stands for the straps with carriage bolts the next day. I didn't want to drill through the hull. Whole swap cost me around $250 with new filler hoses and fuel lines with filters. I scored though.

I've noticed that the E10 gas we have now leaves that chalky shit everywhere when it evaporates...Had plenty of problems with my lawnmower and other 4 stroke yard tools. I've since started pouring my 2 stroke mix in everything and have no more problems at all. The oil in the fuel tends to coat everything I think, and that makes it so the chalky shit doesn't stick to anything or maybe doesn't even develop. Throw a bit of oil (2 stroke or marvel mystery oil) in the gas and see if things improve.
