Hey guys, here it goes. I’m in the midst of rebuilding my BBC and I have no idea where to go with it.
Here’s what I mean.
As is, I have a Hardin marine 454 with the 405 kit. When I bought the boat, it came with a duel Holly 650 tunnel ram, 049 heads, harman exhaust logs and snails, stock bore and domed pistons. I’m unsure of what the HP is/was. The previous owner figured around 450 hp, I don’t know, but it pushed my 81 Bahner bubble deck with Berk JG pump (no droop and original nozzle) to 67 mph at 5100 rpm. I’m going to have the pump freshened up and already have a droop and place diverter ready to be installed when the motor build is complete. I know that hull set up and pump have a lot to do with MPH and will be working on that when the motor is complete. It is a delta pad hull by the way.
I pulled the motor apart because I was having blow bye on some of the cylinders. Oil through the breathers made a huge mess in my boat. :banghead:
Back to my original comment of not knowing where to go with the motor. Here’s where it gets tricky for me.
I love the “old-school” look that the duel carb tunnel ram set up gives my boat and don’t really want to change it, but I was given, for free, a set of Merlin 043-C rectangle port heads, a matched Edelbrock Victor intake manifold and a Holley 950 Carb. All this came from a friend of mine who took it off of his 2-season old BBC. He now built a 950 HP blown BBC V-drive deal and had this stuff laying around. Obviously, he wants it back if I don’t use it.
I know that the Merlin heads are an “upgrade” (Still heavy as hell) to the 049 heads, but I’ve also read that I can get great flow and HP numbers out of the 049 heads that I have and I wouldn’t have to change the look and all the damn linkage of my boat.
So, after all of that this is what I’m trying to ask. My goal is to break into the 80-mph window. I feel like with my hull and pump set up correctly I should be able to do that with 550-600 HP at 5200-5500 RPM. Or am I bat shit crazy? I’m ok with a reality check on this. I’d rather be realistic and not be disappointed then to be disappointed at the end of this.
I’m planning on going .60 over with a dome style piston. Hydraulic roller cam, I don’t know the numbers on the cam I’m going to go with yet. I want it to be healthy, but I also want to be water reversion conscious when I choose the cam as I’m going to be running TT headers.
First, Can I achieve that HP goal with the 049 heads without having to modify them? And, should they be able to handle a healthy roller cam I throw at it?
Or
Should I forget about the “old-school” of the tunnel ram and go with the Merlin rectangle port heads and victor intake set up to reach my goal?
I don’t mind tips on set up for the rest of the motor either!

I have a 79 Bahner, BBC 496 with iron truck heads 8 and a half to 1 compression, basic truck motor and pump work done, before my pump work I ran about 72 mph @ 5300 rpm, now I run 5900 rpm, now that I got my pump work done and my impeller cut from an A to a B, I am around 80 mph, pump work is definitely key. 👍🏻

It's the whole package. Everything adds up.
If the engine isn't making power...
If the pump isn't maximizing thrust...
If the keel isn't loading the pump...
If the hull is riding too wet, isn't trimmed out, isn't safe...
