Title: Msd gears for bbf
Post by: The_Dean_85 on April 20, 2018, 10:31:12 AM
So just picked up a marine ready to run and it had a huge letter saying stop before install and make sure you have the right gear. So I researched and heard about what gears are for different cams. Problem is I don’t know any history on the motor except seems stock to me and a 1968 bbf. Any thoughts on how to know if the cast iron gear will be ok without opening up the motor.

Maybe a simple comparison with the gear you have in there now. If it’s the same run it. My 2 cents anyway.

That was my first idea but how is the easiest way to identify an iron gear from a steel one due to it being in oil. Just an honest question never removed or had to mess with a distributor.

I just tried to compare on the net and couldn’t determine visually. I’m sure someone will pipe in this evening with a definitive answer.

Go to summit racing and research your distributor. It will list which gear it has.

Yeah couldn’t find much either. I know it has a cast iron one on it from the factory just hoping it will work and not have to get a different one pressed on. Have to have it all back together and working for Mother’s Day
