HELP! I have an MSD pro billet 8365 HEI distributor on my stock '87 454 and have no idea on how to set it up. The vacuum advance is not in use. Do I set the timing at like 4 degrees BTDC and utilize the centrifugal advance weights or pin it at full advance, say like 22 degrees? I am also not sure on how to "pin it" at full advance...and if it's set at full advance will I overheat while idling through the no wake zone?

Depends on too many things to talk you through it... look for about 34* BTDC at above 2500 RPM, this will get you to the right park.

The tech guy at MSD told me to set my initial timing at 16* and to install the blue springs and the black bushing. Now I need to know whether I should utilize the vacuum advance or not. Will this make it easier to start? It just seems like a real effort to find the vacuum advance lockout kit for this dizzy.

throw the vacuum advance in the trash. You will never need it....
The engine will not create enough vacuum to pull it in........
Lock out the advance mechanism.
