For the experts on the MSD 6AL, I think that's it, the one that takes the limiter chip, is it possible to hook a switch the spot where the chip goes or rig something up so I could manually activate that function? Thanks in advance,

I don't think I fully understand the question...Why would you want to "adjust" the rev limit speed?
I guess it would be possible with a relay to disable the rev limit function, but I think it completely defeats it's purpose...
Maybe I am not grasping what you want to do....

you could put a 2 step from msd you could hook up a switch to one of them to activate . i did that of my car when i went in the burn box would activate so it would limit on that chip then power off to activate the other one

I have an older OMC and I'd like to put electronic ignition on it but it has a shift assist module which doesn't allow that, I think there are ways around it none of which work well from what I read. It works kind of like the MSD limiter, kills ignition to varying cylinders when it's active. It activates via a switch and is only used at idle rpm when shifting in and out of gear. The module works with points ignitions, and I was thinking an MSD would help the boat start and run a little better. I thought there might be a way to hook the switch that activates the module to the RPM limiter on an MSD, or am I dreaming? Thanks

An OMC shift assist module can be used with any ignition system....Do you have the one with a black plastic box with two bolt holes?
What you need to do is use the gray wire to the negative side of the coil and the purple on the positive side of the coil, it will work like normal...
The rev limiter is not a good option IMHO, it works in a similar fashion, but not effective enough.
OMC Cobra or Stringer mount?
Done it before, it works great...Mercruisers shift assist literally just kills the ignition totally dead, but they shift better so it's non issue...They also have a CDI type ignition system. An MSD box is a no brainer, you don't even have to rewire it from the original Thunderbolt V system... :thumbup:

Thanks, I'll have to look at the module, I'm headed there later to wax it up, make sure it starts and runs for one last river trip. It's a Cobra, 1990 4.3, it has the original module. It's a good little boat, holds more folks than my jet does, and my friends wife and kid aren't afraid of it since it's quiet. The shift assist works, most of the time anyway. I did some reading and most people seem to have issues when they switched to electronic ignition, I know Delco makes some kit but I'm not spending that kind of money. I think it could use some help in the ignition department, I was thinking I'd put an MSD box on it and be done but I don't know how it would react if the shift assist kicked in. Then I got to thinking maybe I could use the MSD rpm function as the shift assist. I'll get the info on what's there and let you make a recommendation, thanks

You'll have pretty good luck with a Pertronix kit to convert your prestolite dizzy....The kit is cheap and they work well...
Use the distributor number (not the J1171 SAE number) and get on their website to check it out. I have done literally dozens of the changeovers...Points suck, and with an MSD box, you will still have the points... :thumbdown:

Msd makes a dial switch for a rev limiter that hooks up to the system. Works good from what I head. I strongly recomend a rev limiter of some sort. If you pump sucks air it will over rev and damaged the motor as it did mine. in less than a second. Its not a digital 6 is it?

If you get a 4.3 L I/O to "suck air" I will be more than a little impressed.... ;D
