OUCH!
« on: April 17, 2008, 08:58:12 AM »

I have learned that I will never tease Luckie Stiff bout blowing up his shit again!  O0

I have it all torn down and the block is fine.... seems like all the pistons were smacked... and I didn't rev it over 6000rpm... I'll be checking the valve springs for sure...

Now I have a question about pistons...

forged? hyper? whats a good compression to run safely on pump gas?

Oh yeah... its a BBC with 113cc heads.

Thanks!

Spend the money and go with Keith Black Hypereutectic Pistons. ;)  I'm set up at 10:1 compression but there might be a better set up for the BBC.  I'm running a BBF 460 with flat top Keith Black Hypereutectic Pistons, 10:1 compression and will run on mid grade gas, I guess.  It started up on regular and has been tuned to that so I may have gotten lucky.  Still need to get it out on the river and really test and tune before I'll know for sure.

Mixture is too lean, octane is too low, or both.

IMO, only forged.

"whats a good compression to run safely on pump gas?" Question of my year right there. There is no answer, compression ratio, chamber shape, piston shape, quench area, cam duration, cam centerline, etc etc etc etc etc determines what gas you can run.

I still have to zero one of the fuel sending units and have to transfer gas to do that.  WHen I get that done I may even the gas out in both tanks and then top off with some Chevron Supreme before going to the river/lake for the final tunning.

Sorry I have had Bad Luck with KB Hypers in a BBC. Go forged.
Just my .02 cents.
