Sweet! first things first, get a lockout kit for that distrib. and throw the vacuum advance into the swap meet pile.

I love the smell of motor oil in the evening   ^-^

looks good 78 if you lock out the dizzy might have s problem starting to much initial timing .

The vacuum advance will not get the timing where it will need to be at WOT, you will/may find the motor will not pull all the way to the top RPM, it will sort of just fade out to the top, if you lock out the vacuum advance, you can set the timing to obtain max advance at a desired RPM with just the centrifugal advance weights (heavier weights=sooner total advance)

There just is not enough vacuum to pull the extra 12* out of the vacuum advance at WOT, (unless its way undercarbed.)
If you or a buddy have a timing light, set the total advance to about 34*BTDC at like 2600RPM (should be a descent starting point)

Idle timing is somewhat irrelevent to a point, sometimes a little hard to start if too much advance.

This is just my opinion and subject to being proven wrong    ;)

A cheap trick is to put a separate switch on the ignition circuit and get the motor spinning first then light the ignition off...

I would make sure you get the centrifugal advance to obtain at least 15* advance.

Brad doesn't have enough server space   ;D

Any idea wha this mill has for guts?  ie crank, cam, pistion/compression, rocker arms, carb, etc......

If it's stock, the Cobra Jet Crank gear advances the valve timing if the motor was built in the '70's, actuall very cheap and wakes em up a little...

Otherwise keep throwing time and money at it until it does what you want.......work smart, not hard...Crap, now I sound just like my pop.  :banghead:

Cam timing will be set for "SMOG" (new timing set will make it better) a new pre 1970 crank gear wil help (like $20) keep it under 4600 R's and use good oil, even put some cam break in addative in with every oil change, she'll live for a while if you take care of it.

Good luck, there's nothing like a good running junkyard dog.. ;)

What I am about to say comes from experience....  Even though the engine is used, the tolerances for a truck and a boat are different.  I tried the same thing and ended up popping the tops off of forged pistons because the rings werent gapped for "extreme duty" (marine).  It might work out well for you and it might not.  Kind of a crap shoot!  If you have the time, you should try to get some of those tolerances loosened up.  Good luck, the engine looks really nice.

That's a real good point, don't run too high viscosity of oil (I'm thinking 10W40) and maybe a stat kit for say 160* would prolong the inevitable, stat kits for Fords aren't too common, but there are other ways to skin this cat. ;)

Thats true, if you could stabilize the temp at what a 78 f-250 might run at then you would probably be in good shape.  Thats good info GT, never thought of or heard of doing that to prolong it.

Not me having all the info...I wish ::)  Just seems that everytime some posts a question about what to do to a wrecking yard special, they all want it to be NHRA spec...

Brad, the site as far as I know is working tip top, keep it up   8) And thanks for letting us play in your yard! (another funny)
