Title: N/a or blower?

The hull is a 76 eliminator bubble deck! What are your guys thoughts? I don’t want to spend a shit load of money. I was thinking of dropping in blueprints 632ci n/a from summit, it’s claimed 815hp. Or do I add a blower to the current 454 motor thats in the boat and call it a day? What are your guys thoughts?

Stay away from blowers unless you are going to run race gas. The added hp they offer is not worth the extra weight

I say blower!  But maybe I'm bias!  Lol they look bitchin, sound bitchin,  and will wake your current situation up. Depending on what you have,  I don't run race gas in my boat,  just 91 and 28* of timing locked out..

What master sergeant said about the weight definitely has merit.  Approximately 70-80 pounds is worth .10 seconds in the 1/4 mile.

Regarding the pump gas, that depends on a lot of factors.  Ultimately it comes down to (with any engine): when air is compressed, temperature increases.  All mechanical superchargers heat the air.  The efficiency of the supercharger is the ratio of how much heat is added to the air during the process.  This is Intake Air Temperature (IAT).  IAT is then added to the ambient air temperature and to the heat generated during the compression cycle.  Then there is the heat that is transferred to the intake charge from the internal surfaces of engine.  If this temperature is greater than the flash point of the fuel, it preignites.

If you do go the supercharger route, a centrifugal is better suited to jet boats.  A Positive Displacement (PD) blower makes so much torque down low in the RPM range, it can overwhelm the jet pump impeller on the hit.  The centrifugal generates boost where it can be best utilized

Regarding, Do you "add a blower to the current 454 motor thats in the boat and call it a day?"  That really depends on what is in the 454.  At the very least, you need to double-keyway the crankshaft and add a billet hub or damper.

Thanks for the info, if I went n/a what’s a good ci? The boat is just a cruiser with the occasional full throttle pass, the boat currently runs 65mph on mild 454, but looking to be in the 90+mph zone, I’m aware that the pump needs to be gone thru, but looking for suggestions

I had your exact thoughts 11 years ago. I went with the Procharger. Overall cost was the lowest going this direction. Marine kit comes with intercooler. At the time it came with a carb box, I much prefer the carb hat I have now. You can bolt it on and go with 5 psi of boost right away. More boost when you rebuild your motor to handle it. You'll probably see 10-15 mph gain. My old Rogers broke 90 mph only after rebuilding engine for the Procharger bumping to 9 psi and some pump work.

I then added Methanol / Water injection for about $600 that only triggers at full throttle. My surprise was 200 more rpm on the top end. Best money ever spent here. Design is more about longevity keeping the charge cool.

As you can see in the pics it's a pretty simple set up. The 1st engine I put this on it fit under the hatch, 87 21' Eliminator.


Whatever direction you go understand you're opening a can of worms that you'll never go back from. The joys & headaches of high performance boating  8)
