I have a stock 454 BBC with a mild cam in my 79 Rebel. I would like to install a more aggressive cam and gain a little more rpm's. What would you guys recommend.

Need more info-
what cam is in it now?
what heads?
what exhaust? intake? comp. ratio?
stock 330 hp truck motor or stock ls-6 450 hp?
what impeller is in the pump?
AND where do you want to go?
go roller, too

I ran the numbers on the block last night and it shows it's a 1978 two bolt main. If I read it rite it's only 215 horse but I'm not sure. I will need to find out about the heads. I do know there oval port and a stock intake. Not sure on compression or cam. Does this sound rite so far?

find the head #'s
probably 781's.
logs and snails?
-
Cant find the head numbers they must be under the valve covers and I will have to check them this weekend. The block number is 3999289 and the intake number is 393841. I run both logs and snails and headers.
-
Yes they are located under the valve covers

I looked under the valve covers and the last three numbers on the heads are 049, I guess they are the high flow type of oval port heads.
-
3999289 can also be a vette or chevelle motor what #s are not the front pad

Are you saying look on the front pad for numbers? I will go out today and see if I can get more numbers off of it, there kind of hard to read like they did a crappy job of molding them in there.

Watch your valve clearance. You might have a problem if you just throw a cam in there. Stock pistons may not have a big enough relief in them.

^^^^ x2
Stock 049 heads will start to crush valve stem seals at about .570 lift (with 1.7 rockers) unless the bosses are cut down.

The damn thing runs REAL good the way it is, thinking I'll just leave it alone and add some bling to it. I do have a line on a 427 that I might throw some cash at.

There's no replacement for displacement.

If you are running log and snails you can't get to crazy on cam size but Doug herbert make some really nice cams I have a solid roller cam in my chevy and love the cam

Decided to just stay with the headers.
