Title: Need help!!! 460 took on water now it won't start.
Post by: arffaz on May 23, 2015, 11:29:42 PM
So long story.... I was cruise down river when I heard a noise from my engine bay. I took a look back there and my alternator belt slightly shredded and had come off the pulley. I turn around and started to head back up river. While heading up river my engine died, most likely batteries died.

So when this happened I was pointed toward shore and ended up beaching my boat. A real cool couple cruised by and were able to pull me off he bank but in doing so my logs back filled with water and filled some of the piston cylinders. I didn't find this out until I tried to start it a couple times and notice it was acting like it was hydro locked.

So I pulled my plugs and cranked the engine over until I pushed all the water out. I checked the oil and it seems like I have got a little water mixed in there. I put the plugs back in and tried to start it and it will fire up for a second and die. I tried to start it several times with no success. I ended up pulling the plugs and cranking it over to exhaustive water, but very little to nothing came out. I repeated this process several times, still no start. I decided to check my comprssion and I got 130 to 140 in all cylinders. I have clean the plugs checked the gaps and even unbolted the logs to drain and left over water in the logs... Still won't start for more then a second. Any ideas please. I am getting ready to wd40 the cylinders for the night and come back at it tomorrow.

When it starts, does it just cough sputter and die. Or does or sound good and just fade out?

If it has a ballast resistor, I would start there. The low voltage could have smoked it.

Starts really strong like it should keep running but as soon as the starter disengages it dies abruptly

Ballast resistor is toast. Temporarily put both wires on the same side.

To fix it you will either need a new resistor, or an internally resisted  coil.

You think it fried even thought it wasn't submersed? I didn't talk on any water in the engine bay I came in the engine backwards through the snails

The alternator belt taking a duke and causing low battery voltage caused the resistor to over heat. Had nothing to do with water.

Ahhhh I see! So to eliminate this as re culprit I can move the positive side of the of the battery to the starter side and it should go?

What? No.

On the resistor (if it has one) there are two terminals.

The ballast resistor looks like a ceramic block.

Put the two wires together or jump across them and fire it up.

Just don't leave it like that permanent.

Doesn't look like I have one on this boat, I have one I my smaller Howard but can't find one on this boat.

It could be a resistor wire.

What kind of ignition?

The only other thing it could be is an ignition fuse or a starter switch.

MSD Blaster 2

That's just the coil.

What distributor?

I was able to get out and run it yesterday, no issues.

Thanks Glenn.

I really do owe you big time, I would still be sitting here scratching my head.
