Hey all. I got this boat on a trade on a chopper I built. its a 20' Tarva Berkeley jet Got 3 runs on it and ended up with a hole in my #2 piston.
Took it in to a local shop and they said it looks like it had been rebuilt but not to marine specs.
doing a mild cam, intake, carb, ignition and dyno im looking at 6200. Thats a mild rebuild maybe getting 400 hp.
does this sound about right? I just want a nice family boat more on reliability than hot rod.
Ive gone into the shop a few times and it seems like every time I go in the price creeps up a few hundred bucks. it's just tore down and I haven't committed to the rebuild in the shop yet.
Thanks in advance!

Do you have an estimate or a list of what is being done? It really depends on the extent of work being done and what new parts are being used and what can be reused.

6200 seems high and 4400 Rpms seems low. I don't know your hull/pump set up. I bought a 521 Ford shortblock for around 4k. That was internally balanced and set up for a boat application. Just to give you perspective of your options and cost.

Running wet headers? T valve? Gate valve? How much water coming through headers at idle?

Running wet headers yes no water at idle only when boat is going and I have a t valve and gate valve ... Hull is 78 Tahiti with a jacuzzi wj with diverter.... I just remember as a kid my uncle had a older Sanger with a 351 and it seemed to run all day with no problems and seemed pretty reliable... is a tunnel ram and double carb needed or smaller intake with single carb good enough? Sorry for being a rook owning is new to me but been raised on the lake and love to wrench on things!!

We specialize in Ford 460s and the factory iron-block-and-head performance builds that we execute usually get quoted at $1500 per 100 horsepower for a long block. Therefore, your quote of 400 hp for $6200 sounds right to me. This assumes the shop is competent and knows these engines very intimately and down to every detail.
