Does it even sound like it is trying to start?

Double check all the basics, wiring connections, grounds, Ignition wiring, How did you verify timing?

Just throwing things out there, maybe it will help you remember something.

Need more info, how long has the motor been sitting? Sometimes (not too often) if a new motor sits for a long time, the cylinders dry up and there is not enough compression to light off (also could be fuel washed), try a little oil down the carb for that, otherwise, the spark has to be at the right spot, does it pop back through the carb? Also, how strong is the spark, may not be getting full spark to the plug, especially if an electronic dealio....

Valve lash could also be too tight, not making compression, who did the cam timing?, that could be wrong too, boy the more I think about it, these things are a pain in the ass...LOL ;D

first off, the river is not the place to do a cam break in.  Next, take the gasoline rainbirds off, put a single four barrel on it for the break in.  Recheck everything  The last thing you want to be doing is cranking the engine without firing and getting it oiled, you WILL lose that cam.

Take off a rocker cover. If they let the motor sit, they may have planned on that and backed off the rockers to save the springs. Sounds obvious, but maybe. Second, double and triple check on the 180 degree out thing. (Easy to do, #1 comes to TDC Twice in a cycle, once for compression and once for exhaust). Been there and done that MANY times., not trying to make you feel like an idiot. We've all done it, and recently.

Find TRUE tdc then set initial timing to 10 degrees or so BTDC. Should fire.

If that's ok, Compression check it. obviously it's cranking.

If all that checks and double checks ok, Follow Terry's advice, add an 8-71, two 1050 dominators, get an Exxon Credit card.......... ;D

but no one wants to win that way.

there is something stupid we are missing. engines are simple creatures and if it has air fuel and spark it will run. we just need to get those three things to dance together

What type dist? points or elec.

Do you have 12 volts at the ignition box, or coil?  If the input volts are down so is the output.

Pull a plug wire, stick your finger in it.   Have someone crank it over, if you piss yourself spark is good  ;D

Did you try starting fluid?   What effect?

If it's popping up the intake I'm betting the timing is 180 out too or it's not getting the fuel you think it is.  (not likely with 2x4's)    Do you have a vac gauge?  If so what's it reading while you crank?

Oh, and don't forget it's not air, fuel, spark bang.

It's air, fuel, compression, spark, bang  8)

Days like yours is why Ford put the dist. up front, easier to trouble shoot  ::)

Good luck, and yea, it could happen to a ford..... just not likely  ;D

Did you pull a plug to see if it's fuel soaked?   If it is why not unhook one of the carbs, go to wide open throttle and give it a shot of starting fluid.

Did you ever consider a 460  ::)
