I just bought a 1979 eliminator daycrusier with 460. water plumbing looks like chit. there is a ball valve by drivers seat to control temp. WTF. Where can I buy a relief valve for cheap. I dont want a cheap valve and I know you can buy them cheaper than 80.00 like jet boat stores are for. Any help would be great. Also first time on fourm so I dont even know if I posted this in the right place.

Logs and snails?... I run a gate valve(3/4" brass, h/d speed n marine) on the pump, then tee'd to the logs, out of logs to w/p block plates, out t/stat to the snails, runs 130*-150*(no wake zone). 76 Elim. Cruiser, Was BBF (plumbed same way), now BBC. With logs, a regulator is overkill, IMHO
River/lake temp 55*-88*
With open headers, I run a ball (header) valve by the drivers seat. engine temp 125*-140*.

You can try Graingers or McMaster-Carr for adjustable pressure relief valves.

otherwise a home depot gate valve works FINE. worst case if it gets a little corroded you can buy another one for what... $3?

Lake temperatures can vary over the season and ball valves are common practice in jet boats. There's nothing cheesy about ball valves.

$10 gate valve from local hardware store here. HD didn't have any for 3/8 or 1/2.
Ball valve is more on/off. Gates are what you want for flow control.

Im still new at the jet boat thing as well. What happens if you leave the gate open and it runs lake temp water in it the whole time? Is that a bad thing or does the engine just perform better with a little heat??? :screwy:

The internal combustion automobile engine does use heat to some extent and which helps the engine make power and also the engine will last longer (reduced wear) if the operating temperature is higher than lake water temp. With a wide open gate valve, most boats typically run at 120*-130* F. If you start turning the gate toward the closed position you will eventually begin to see a water temperature rise in your engine (usually less than 1-1/2 turns open from fully closed).
You will get varying opinions on a good water temp for a jet boat; I like to run my engine at about 160" as controlled by the gate valve (no thermostat) while running hard. Then, upon entering a 5 mph zone the temp might spike to 190* (because water flow has decreased with decreassed rpm) and then it will settle back down to 170 or so. So I don't go any higher than 160* while running across the lake because I don't want to "steam" (boil the cooling water in the engine) when I enter the 5 mph zone.

another reason to get operating temp is so that the oil heats up and any moisture is vented out of the breathers. if you always ran cold you'd get moisture in the oil and then you'd end up with a milkshake in the pan, and sometime after you'd be doing a rebuild.
the optimum operating temp really depends on how the motor was built...

I picked up a marine PRV for 50 bucks on ebay. You cant use any ole PRV. You can buy cheap ones for like 10 bucks, but you can only get them down to about 33lbs. I know cuase i tried. The one i picked up is 7.5 - 22 lbs. Plan on running it at 17lbs.

From what I understand you might wanna aim for 10-13psi
