« on: January 25, 2016, 01:57:31 PM »
My father in law was telling me about these heads he can get for "cheap". I'm suspicious on anything "cheap" ...lol
Has anyone seen or heard of this brand? Thanks

I like you would be somewhat skeptical, i've seen a few videos on youtube and ive seen a few articles mention them in hot rod magazines but that doesn't really mean much.

summit sells them for 700 bare for the pair but for a few hundred more you could get a much safer head. summit has trick flow as well as a Brodix heads that run 900 a pair bare. I don't know much when it comes to this stuff but I'm sure someone that knows what their talking about will chime in soon

Anytime I hear the word cheap I cringe.

Why would anyone put anything called cheap on an otherwise expensive engine?

This blows my mind.

They're junk. They would make awesome bookends or glass coffee table legs.

They have a three month warranty from the factory. Why three months?  Think about how long it takes to get an engine together and running.

I don't care how "cheap" they are,  they cost too much when the smoke clears.

Brodix, AFR, Edlebrock, GMPP, Dart are all good brand heads.

I would pay twice what you can get those Chinese knock off chunks of crap for just for the peace of mind.

Just look at the reviews on Sunmit, Jegs, Motor Warehouse etc....

I bought a set of their 200cc sbc heads recently for my fiancés Chevelle. Honestly the casting looks better than the set of AFRs I bought for my BBC. I know that doesn't mean much, but everything I've been finding on promaxx is good. They aren't like that procomp garbage. On YouTube headbytes porting raves about them and Chris Straub used a set with one of his clay smith legend series cams to make a street able 530hp 383. They are what used to be patriot performance. I don't know that I'd run them on a full kill build, but I'll most certainly try them out on this street car motor.

 · 8 months ago   Bad quality
I bought the heads a month ago and installed them. These are on my Chevelle that I do not drive much. There is only a 3 month warranty which I feel shows how this manufacturer feels about their product. After about a half hour of warming the engine up, I backed the car out of the garage and noticed coolant starting to come out of the right side exhaust. I quickly pulled the car back into the garage and shut it down. At this point the coolant was steadily coming out of the exhaust like a garden hose running about 1/2 flow. I immediately removed the spark plugs and found no. 4 coolant pouring out. I removed the head and found a bb sized hole in the combustion chamber casting. I was told they were sold as a set so I needed to return them both for warranty which I did not feel comfortable leaving the other one on any way. When I called tech support before disassembling the head, they mentioned possibly a bad casting which leads me to believe they have had some bad castings in the past. Needless to say I have more down time and am missing a few car shows. I am displeased that they might know of the issue and still send out a bad quality product which in turn cost me quite a bit of time in the shop and more money in parts. I should have just spent the extra money in the first place and bought a better brand. I would have thought jegs would not sell this type of quality.

No, I do not recommend this product.
Bad casting Photo This action will open a modal dialog. Bad casting

From Jegs.

Buy them if you want to.

Not a fan.

I have bought three sets of Dart heads,  one of them iron,  two sets of Brodix, and one set of Edlebrocks Performer series.

The prices ranged at the time from $600 to $1,200.

You definitely get what you pay for.

That's crazy. Which runner size or part number was that?

I know some castings are newer design than others, the cutaways I've seen they look super nice and thick. I've heard more good than bad, and I've even seen bad reviews on heads from the likes of dart before. So I'd take it all with a grain of salt personally

I personally don't have any experience with ProMaxx, but its just going to come down to what you feel comfortable with and if the couple hundred dollars are worth it, like what was said above every brand will have their bad reviews so its hard to say. Everything ive read and seen say their better than procomp but that's not saying much, and with the thought of spray you might want to make sure you get something that will really hold up, better to spend once than to have to do it again.

This is my screwy way of thinking.

What makes them cheaper?

Let's try this.

Let's say company "A" uses premium materials, does all of its own R and D, limited marketing and advertising,  build in America and only sold to select retailers wholesale with some room for profitability for the final point of sale to make a few bucks.
They offer a great warranty and stand behind the product.

They have model "ABC" for $1000, leaving a margin of about 18%

Now let's look at company "B".
They farm out all the casting to a lower bidder,  copy products already on the market,  source overseas labor,  sell to virtually everybody,  advertise like crazy, have a low margin making it a volume game to make any real profit and the warranty is only for defects and workmanship for 90 days.
They offer model "123" for a retail price of $750, leaving a margin of about 12%.

Let's say company A has a 2% failure rate that they cover 90%of (remember they sell to a select few).

Let's say company B has a 15% failure rate that they cover 50% of (remember,  they sell to anybody).

Who has more profit at the end of the day?

How difficult is it for company A to stay alive?

Remember Crane Cams?

Compare it to The Home Depot (or any other big blob store for that matter), where will innovation come from if all the innovative companies are cheated by counterfeits and overseas junk?

The well known brands don't get there by accident.

On a side note. What does it cost you when these "cheap" parts fail? They don't pay you back for collateral damage. That is on you. I personally guarantee you it will cost more than the amount you saved by buying the cheaper (remember, we're talking $200-300 bucks here) parts.
Head gaskets and fluids will top $150 without even thinking about it, throw in any shipping,  machine work or hard parts and your investment is insane.

You don't use tennis shoe laces on a pair of wingtips.

My grandfather (RIP) would have called these "plastic spurs". They look intimidating, will do the job once, but then your left with nothing.

He was an odd duck, but at the same time, a genius.

I couldn't agree more with you GT, at one point my gfs dad and I where going to run a set of cheap heads but you and a few others talked some sense into me, the risk just isn't worth it. If the parts fail your looking at a huge difference in what was a 200 dollar difference turns into thousands pretty fast and you'd be at the same point had you just spent the few hundred to begin with or left it alone.

To O.P.
its your call, I would hold out for a good set of heads, I cant bash Promaxx I have no experience with them, but for piece of mind I would get a name brand set that way you don't have to worry especially with spray. that's just my .02 but if your wanting heads you could always go with vortecs or a nice set of cast iron heads which should run you about what the ProMaxx would.

So if dart charges 3500 for a set of pro 1 heads and you can get AFR for 2400, does that mean the dart is better? It's a flawed idea to think that just because something costs more that it is better. These heads aren't that much cheaper than the name brands, now if something is like 1/3 to 1/2 price, that's scary cheap.

I actually didn't say that. What I said was "you get what you pay for".

In this particular case you could say you don't get what you don't pay for.

If you are thinking that an entry level "cheap" aluminum head that costs roughly what a quality iron head costs and you have no problem with it,  I say go for it.

I personally will save up the fun tickets and have at least a piece of mind that I didn't cheap out.

Not saying it won't puke,  just saying the confidence level will be much higher.

If I haven't said it in a while,  I hate doing chit twice.

It really all comes down to what the O.P. is comfortable and confident with. Given the fact that he plans to spray and make some passes I'm assuming, I would recommend something that is more well known and stand by their product more, but it all depends on what you want out of your motor, you can only have two of the three (power, reliable, cheap). at the end of the day its your choice, I would just look online the best that I could and talk to anyone that has them and see what they say, summit has some reviews that are in the later part of 2015 that seem to have a few issues with castings(leaks) what ever you choose I hope it works out for the better its never fun having issues.

I gotcha, and I didn't mean to put words in your mouth. I get the whole thing, but to Me cheap is procomp, you can buy those for 650 a set assembled. And I know of one guy on this site who runs the procomp BBC heads (with higher quality parts and assembly work) in the 700hp range plus some nitrous. And those things are notorious for dropping the valve seats. I did a bunch of homework of my own before I bought the set I have and felt comfortable that at my desired power level (400hp and no power adders) that they would hold up. Time will tell, but I'd rather try it on a low buck small block than a high dollar BBC. I'm a little cautious but if I had no faith whatsoever I wouldn't have bought them.

Sorry to thread Jack, I know I'm not even the one who was asking about them. I just think it's possible for someone other than Brodix and dart to build heads lol.

Good points.

Guys, I'm not trying to come off as a dick.

I unfortunately have seen this too many times.
My family owned and operated a full on automotive parts store and machine shop for nearly 30 years.

I've seen guys buy off brand parts,  bring them in the shop and want my uncle to build a motor around them.

That shop built 410" Sprint car engines, weekend warrior drag motors,  pull truck engines.

These "imitation" parts seldom make the cut.

An AFR head has a lifetime warranty on casting and workmanship.

A Brodix head has no warranty at all (read the statement under FAQ).

I find it interesting that most knock off heads have a 90 day warrantee.

So I guess in short, all I am saying is "buyer beware".

I thought I would share the whole plastic spurs metaphor.

Plastic spurs.

Plastic spurs can look intimidating,  plastic spurs are much cheaper than hand forged steel.
Plastic spurs can be had by all who want a set.
Plastic spurs will work quite well for the job at hand,  once.
Plastic spurs need to replaced often, used once you are left with nothing.
You won't find used plastic spurs. There will be nothing left. They need to be replaced often. Making them more costly as time goes by.
Once you have spent enough on plastic spurs to have purchased steel ones,  the lesson will be learned. You will still be left with nothing after one use.

I copied this from a picture from the old shop my grandad had. It was written on the back of a picture of grandpa flying his hand built gyro copter like the one he flew in WWII.

Just thought I would share where some of my weirdness comes from.
