Title: NEW Motor by JP MARINE...Pics inside
Post by: french3sd on May 04, 2010, 05:49:27 PM: I am on these boards all the time but never post. I though this would be a good time to post. I have owned my 79 Hondo for over 7 years now. I purchased this boat from JP Marine, when he had just completed the resto on it. The original motor was a mild BBC 468 (stock intenals) with a holley 600 CFM double pumper with about 380HP. What a great motor never gave me any problems for 7 years and I drove it hard. Unitll last OCT when I went out for one last time and it blew...and I mean blew. I ended up breaking an exhaust valve and sucking it in to the block.....which lead to all kinds of damage. SOOOO.......What a great time to build a new motor. I went back to Joe at JP Marine because I trust him and I believe he is one of the best jet boat builders out there.

NEW MOTOR.....whoohooo!!! ;D

496 Stroker at about 600HP I changed to a chrome 850 Holley and upgraded to all forged internal and rollers. New pipes to becasue the old one were shot and I had to have shinny new pipes for the new motor. I spared no expense on this motor and it was worth every penny!! Took it out to EL Cap and only opened her up about 1/2 way and WOW the difference was awsome. Gonna give her a little more time to break in before I really push it.

No, thank you for the concern. The thought of water getting into the MSD was talked about when he mounted it there but JP has never had a problem with that location. It doesn't get that wet there. I was going to get the "Marine" one, but DAMN its like double the cost. I had this same unit in my car and use to power wash the engine all the time with no issues? I was thinking about putting some type of silicone or even some vasoline around where the wires are to reple the moisture.

The Marine one is sealed to protect it from causing spark and avoiding fire/explosion and is a must with a sealed engine compartment and some say a must on all marine use, Including most Coast Guards and water craft enforcement. I spent the extra cash just for the lack of hassle reason alone.

Some might say that's not a good place cause of the heat and vibration also along with the constant temp/humidity change might/could cause condensation to form inside the box causing problems.

When I saw it I thought it looked cool and thought about the down falls of putting it there because I need to mount mine soon and was wondering myself.

Hope others chime in because I don't know if I'm right or wrong. :) Does look cool, Nice float, Welcome to the site.. Roy

Everything was fine with the jet....but I mgiht as well improve some stuff on that end of the spectrum to!! Cant wait to get out on the water....I have a trip planned for the CRAZY memorial weekend at Martinez. I only go to Martinez and the Avi. Only places I know. Martinez cause its quick drive and I love it there.

Post by: french3sd on May 06, 2010, 09:53:47 AM: Yeah the water level is way up. I think its from San Vincete because they have been doing work on the DAM, and the rain to. That RAMP is STEEP to. I liked it when the water level was lower and they had the beach area to park near the other ramp.

I am not to sure but I think it was a custom stainless cut impeller by JP marine. I know he said it was ct for low end power on the take off. My old 468 motor at WOT spun about 5500 and did about 65-68.

The new 496 stroker I dont have any real number yet because I have not opened her up all the way, still breaking her in. On the dyno she spun at 6500 but I put a 6000 plug in the MSD for now. The plan is for 80mph for the new motor...so we will see ;D

My old set up was a stock nozzle and Berkley droop snoot and it ran smooth and strong.
We will see about the new place diverter nozzle and longer snoot on memorial weekend when are at Martinez
