Title: New motor
Post by: SoonerFan on June 11, 2009, 04:44:31 PM
Hey Guys, Whats the best way to break in a 454 BBC ?? The motor was completely rebuilt from the block up.....Ive heard slow bursts of speed ( not holding the same rpms for a long length of time ) and I heard a guy saying balls to the wall to set the rings ?? All input is APPRECIATED !!

i have always been told to break it in like you plan on using it, if you are going to run it hard, break it in that way, don't know if it is right or wrong but it has not failed me yet ;D

All those new parts that need to mesh together... they have to wear in to each other.
Run it hard right away and you don't give it a chance to wear in the bearings, the rods or pistons.  Gotta take off the high spots and get it nice and smooth for the next 5 years running.

Balls to the walls to set the rings   ;D   They'll probably be seated before you leave
the no wake zone.   You'll just ruin your hard work.

Break it in between 2000 to 2500 rpms (variable) for 30 - 40 minutes then change the oil.
Running a brand new engine balls to the walls will break your motor and wallet.

;D  But then again, it IS a CHEBBY.  Who cares   ::)

:o   NEW,     ZZZZOOOOM    =    BOOOOOM    Good luck!

IMHO..alot of it has to do with the tolerances set by your machinist. Marine motors are supposed to be set up a little looser. Make sure your oil is  good and warmed up. The not holding 1 rpm thing is for cam break in. As far as seating the rings...alot depends on the rings and the type of hone. Personally I'd stay away from syn. oil for a while. Good luck...

Run it as you intend on using it....alternate RPM's

Sooner, do ya have to break in a new cam also ??? That hasnt been mentioned yet, and is a very important step for your break in ???

Yea 76, the cam is also new...hey and what is the "break in" time ?? or is there one? I mean how long before its considered "broke in" ??

What kind of cam do you have?

There's really not a "break in" time. Either the motor is going to work, or it won't. Hammer down, break in the rings... if something is wrong you'll usually find out right away. Breaking it in slowly isn't going to prevent something from happening

I've seen all sorts of theories on this. Even in this thread?

First, break in the cam. That involves removing the inner valve springs and limiting the fluctuating rpms to 2500 at best to avoid valve float. This is best done on a stand or bench, but can be done on the boat with the drive line out. Then change the oil. This is done to both wear mate the cam to the lifters, and to harden the cam surface somewhat. Your bearings will like this too.

Do this for at least an hour, IMO, but times vary. This will knock of all rough spots and get the bearings in and good! Change the oil.

Then Oh yeah, to break in the rings, etc, run it like you stole it! They're already mostly seated, they need to seat where they'll most likely hit so go for it!. And after a couple hours of this thrashing, change the oil again.

Do you have enough oil for this? lol

Ray

BTW, I'm from the east coast, and was told all this, almost ver batim, by Bill "Grumpy" Jenkins back in the day regarding a Nova I had built. Stuck with me ever since.

I would take it easy for the first tank of fuel. watch your gauges like a hawk go though the rps but don't hold wide open when you reach top speed. then change oil. and filter. to be on the safe side cut the oil filter and make sure there no large particals of metal inside. expect the oil to be somewhat gray from assy lube and bearing break in.

Follow the cam manufacturer's recommendations   ;D

Make sure the heads are built around the cam, and check v/p clear. plus chec piston to valve clear.
and DEGREE THE CAM.
