As most of you know i just picked up a youngblood tx-19 a coulpe months ago and the dam thing wouldnt idle, so i decided to have the carbs rebuilt as the carbs were being cleaned and rebuilt i took the mallory series 500 fuel filter apart and changed it,when i got the filter out there was about a 1/2inch of a mud like substance in it ,any way i got the carbs back saturday and took the boat out yesterday, it ran like a champ but only for about an hour then it started to sound and perform pretty weird. today when i got home from work i pulled the brand new filter out just to check it and sure enough it had about a 1/4 inch of mud or shit in it WTF

the boat came from Texas, do them texas boys put mud in there gas tanks or did i get screwed

or maybe both who knows. The tanks are plastic or maybe fiberglass and i think there original.Has anbody else had this problem?

you kind of answered your question without even knowing it...the fiberglass tanks held up fine when there was lead in the fuel...when the lead went away the tanks started to deteriorate! Or it could possibly be some kids were playing on the boat, and decided it would run if you put dirt in the tanks...even still the fiberglass tanks should go!

It will be a lot of work but id say pull the tanks and clean them out. If they are fiberglass pull them out and throw them away and get aluminum or stainless ones. Fiberglass is bad news, the mud like stuff in your filter is probably the glass starting to breakdown from the fuel.

You can pick up the barrel style aluminum or SS tanks, straps and all for under 5 bills if you shop the sites and craigslist.

On the other side of it, No, lead does nothing for fiberglass, gasoline does NOT eat it (How many corroded Corvette fuel doors have you seen?), and I concurr with Nordies second reason or just maybe years of neglect. Not a fan of fiberglass tanks, had many tell me with E-15 or now e-85 it'll get eaten up, but really, never seen it, and all methanol or ethanol eat up is aluminum.........

Now, Yeah, the tanks need cleaned. My idea? Go to your local bank and ask for old canvas money/change bags. fill them with as many nuts, bolts as you can find, throw two of them in each tank with a few gallons of diesel fuel and drag the boat many times up the bumpiest road you can find quite a few times. Dig out the bags, clean them, then do it again and maybe even again. That or pull the tanks, but if I'd pull the tanks, I'm puttin sumpin better in, which is MORE money. This is the redneck fix..........forgive me, I'm back in redneck country right now.......

i put 1/2 gal of acetone (prolly NOT a good idea with fiberglass tanks, but i bet theres a similar fiberglass friendly solvent, above suggested some diesel which i hear works good as a detergent) in my alum tanks and drove around town for 15 minutes or so. they were spotless afterwards. also the local marina here in long beach has a few tank cleaning services. i dunno what they'd charge for a professional scrub.

I have this same issue, haven't found sludge in the filters yet but I have fiberglass tanks and I know that Nixonnow had his start leaking. The real fix is going to be new tanks, I'm keeping an eye out for a set and that probably what you want to do. Here is a study I found on fiberglass boat tanks and the effects of not only gasoline but our new best friend ethonal.

hey lupo this article will most likey explain why your boat is just now having the problems...california uses a higher ethynol rating in gasoline, vs where the boat came from!!! I wish you the best of luck, and i would probably talk to boost or marcsrollin about what their gas tank dimensions are, or if they both have round tanks!

I just heard on the news tonight that it takes 4 gallons of regular gas to make one gallon of ethonal...That makes a lot of sence.

Makes perfect sense. The fuel burned in the vehicles to prep, plow and seed the fields. Then fertilize, water and harvest....THEN, mow, mulch or whatever they do and start again.........Not an easy life or business, ask Gord. Not nearly as hard to pump a few barrels of oil from the ground from an already drilled well...........

Thing we have here in the US that Gord doesn't is "subsidy programs" where they pay farmers to "not grow" crops, or "not raise pigs" or cows or whatever to control the market pricing and ensure no excesses that we cannot consume or sell. Over acheivers are actually, and severely, penalized, beleive it or not......this is where ethanol comes from. Although all the old programs are still in effect.

Is it stupid? ABSOLUTELY YES!!!

I thought this new President actually addressed this in a pre election speech once and was gonna fix it....

not to mention what it is doing to the cost of food due to all the acres of corn grown for ethanol making feed grain for cattle expensive and keeping the cost of all other grain artificially high and taking other cropland out of production to grow corn for ethanol

so i pulled my tanks out and holy shit did i find about 6 or 7 hand size pieces of light gage aluminum a nail some broken glass alot of mud alittle bit of paper and thats about it

. We can argue this fiberglass tank issue for 20 or more pages, show link after link, and guess what every new car sold here has in the last 10 or so years? Fiberglass impregnated nylon.......Now I'm not a chemist, but I can bet the compounds are very similar, and molding the things the way they do it using nylon vs resin is MUCH quicker, easier and cheaper...............Not that it has a hugely different composition. Fiberglass resin cannot easily be injection molded is all, and no boat manufacturer ever made tens of thousands of a particular hull to justify making tanks this way.

At the end of the day, clean 'em, keep 'em clean, and replace when/if they ever start leaking..........I know many people running 30+ year old fiberglass tanks and no issues. I know the results of failures on opposites of both scenarios, and me being one of them,

They are both considered alcohol fuels and are equally abusive to the same materials. Thats why when you go to by gaskets they are labeled as alcohol not ethanol or methanol.
