Next step?
« on: August 16, 2011, 07:59:25 pm »
After doing a little searching and failing, I've got a question.

Currently I'm running a fresh 460 with a slightly more than mild cam, roller rockers, Edelbrock RPM intake, 800 Demon carb, MSD distributor w/6m-2 and rev limiter set at 5K and pretty much stock everything else.
My pump is a 12JC-A stock w/manual place diverter and about 20 hrs on it. Seems to be good with no vibrations at any rpm.

My question is what is my next step for top end speed? Right now I'm running about 1mph for every 100 rpm. So 3400 rpm = 34 mph.

Thanks in advance.

well for under 2k the next step, is to clean up what you have. meaning roller rockers , match port the heads to the intake stuff like that. lot of time but easy on the pocket book. and it does help. good luck.

Porting is on my list.

Beginning to think maybe start with a boat that has full stringers and closed bow. THEN start on the motor. :banghead:

not sure if that really matters!!!! open bow or not. its all about what to do??? and how much you want to limit yourself. meaning if you go you and get that bad ass hull thats 18ft flat bottom big ass motor you arnt going to be doing to much with it. and on a ruff day your going to be getting pissed off that it ruff and a pain in the ass to own it.

A good hull design can make a big difference in top speed.

Ralph picked up around 10mph by taking his engine out of a Hondo and putting it into a Liberty

Maybe look into having the bottom of your boat blue printed.

I know on my family's old boat top speed was around 45 ish. After refinishing the bottom it went up to around 58ish.

starting with a good hull never hurts , but if you are happy with your current boat and plan on keeping it for a while, i would suggest swapping out the JC bowl for a split bowl and adding a droop . try to make your hull as efficient as possible then add HP. in the end , speed cost money. how fast can you afford to go?

Cool, I do like my current hull. So this winter Ill look into having the hull tuned. Anybody know of a place near Ventura or San Fernando Valley that can help me with that?
