I run straight 50w valvoline vr1 in my 455. Some guys say multi weight 20w/50 but I've never had a problem

I just got off the phone with a guy at a machine shop in el monte and he said 10/30. That didn't sound correct to me. I think he's thinking break in time.I would think 10 hrs is broken in. What do you think? Thanks.

Question, why run a multi-grade oil in a boat? If you boat in the southwest the oil is 80/90 degrees before you even start the engine.

Question, why run a multi-grade oil in a boat? If you boat in the southwest the oil is 80/90 degrees before you even start the engine.
Each viscosity rating is for a specific temperature. The base oil will naturally loose viscosity as temperature increases. A multi-viscosity has additives, called viscosity modifiers, which are spring-like molecules which extend with temperature, increasing viscosity.
The theory is, thinner oil will flow more freely to the needed areas when the engine is cool. This can be an issue with the oil filter as excessive pressure can blow it apart. The clearances increase as the temperature increases, causing less of a restriction to oil flow. The result is that oil pressure drops. Remember, pressure is the result of resistance to flow.
I have been looking for a direct correlation between clearance and viscosity, as opposed to the trial and error method, to no avail.

dont know why....but it left me wanting more. seemed interesting...and somehow a little vague. dont get me wrong....im no engine builder. ive built engines....none were V....anything. more like flat 4. anyway.
if i walk away with anything from that video....its that...loser clearances have more bleed off than tighter ones do. perhaps requiring more....flow? at higher rpm?

I also run vr1 50 wt..i used to have bad oil pressure fluctuations when i was beating the snot out of my boat with 20/50 in it.... went away with vr1 50...

You run vr1 50 wt or 20/50 I have a fresh 455 and the guy I bought it from said to run 20/50
