Title: Oil at Atozone
Post by: el mojado on April 06, 2016, 06:48:49 PM
I remember last year people talking about VR1 oil going on sale around this time of year. Am I mistaken?

I saw that as well.  I asked the manager at AutoZone in Redlands, which was well stocked with VR1 SAE60, SAE50, and 20-50.  He said he hadn't heard anything and saw nothing regarding this on the internal Valvoline and AutoZone websites.

I bought some last month at autozone and it rang up way cheaper than the shelf price.  I bought 6 qts and some fuel stabilizer and it was like $40.  I know Pep Boys does not have it for some reason.

Napa in my town does not carry it anymore. $6.19 at autozone. $5.65 a quart on amazon with a case of 6.

I spoke with a Napa Auto Parts store owner yesterday in the Antelope Valley and he showed me paperwork from his oil supplier requesting all VR1 be taken off of the shelves and returned.
No longer available in Kommiefornia.
We have switched to Brad Penn.

I will have a couple few quarts of contraband VR1 40 at the Avi trip if anyone needs it.

Got a motor in my boat with no oil in it and I'm leavin to the river Thursday . Anyone know of anywhere that does have vr1?

Whatever everyone else said plus I called Havasu Autozone and they said it wasn't on sale. They said they only know about three days before it goes on sale. But with my experience they don't know most of the times that it's even on sale.

VR 1 is being removed from all stores due to the zinc additive. Its a smog issue only if apparently used in newer vehicle an it gets into converter. The oil if found in CA will have a new sticker on back stating zinc an might be a different design of oil... so they say. Orielly's is the only one left selling it in San Diego @20/50.

I went to my local Napa yesterday that I do a ton of business with through work. I asked my rep about them removing all VR1 and he handed me the paperwork stating the recall was due to labeling issues that don't comply with California regulations.

I have 7 quarts Valvoline VR1 20/50 racing oil.  I've had it since September 2015. If someone needs it come get it. $30.00. I'm sure I paid more than that for it. I'm in south side of Fontana CA

Talked to the motor guy I know yesterday. From what he's heard there was a nationwide recall due to a labeling issue. Sounds like it's gunna go back on the shelves re labeled as a "break in oil" to keep it legal with the amount of zinc in it. I guess lucas oil already did the same thing.

Joe Gibbs... Actually way better oil and about the only thing I use anymore since it has way more good shit in it than vr1. Vr1 has always been, "... If you can't get this... Then this will be ok." As a secondary choice.

You spend $5k to $15k or more on a motor and don't want to spend $30 more for oil... I did that once, it cost me a motor, won't do it again, wouldn't recommend it to anyone

$150??? How big is your pan? 16qts? 10qt pan and a filter should run no more than $105. About no more than 30 bucks than VR1. Unless you change it 8 times a season... I can't see how this would be the make or break deal for affording maintenance. After tearing down engines with several oils, plus trying a couple in back to back dyno tests... The Joe Gibbs is by far the best bang for the buck. I mean you can get all super fruity on synthetics and such... But as far as dead dinosaur juice goes... Best shit I've come across. Only reason I ever recommended the other was IF you can't get preferred "A"... Then second choice "B" will suffice.

Amazon has Vr1 for roughly 36 bucks for 6 quarts. And free delivery by Tuesday. Doing an oil change this week, is that a good deal

http://www.drivenracingoil.com/news/dro/training-center/articles/zinc-in-motor-oil/ (http://www.drivenracingoil.com/news/dro/training-center/articles/zinc-in-motor-oil/)

Been using VR1 for years on my street rod running a solid flat tappet cam with no problems. It, along with my boat will get the Joe Gibbs next oil change.
Sounds like The VR1 will be more available once the labeling issue is resolved, but the JG sounds like a better, more focused product overall.
A few extra bucks every oil change is way cheaper than replacing a flat cam……..

BTW: the Lucas brand 'Hot Rod & Classic' motor oil claims to be high in ZDDP content & appears to be available at Autozone & such.  Seems like it would work in a pinch if you need to add a quart or so to your engine already running VR1

Just ordered 16 qts of 20/50 vr1 for our Comp Jet Motor from Summit. Ordered on Friday, showed up early on Monday.
We use it for break in or one race weekend. Then change it out for 16 qts. Lucas Synthetic.
