Title: Oil pan question
Post by: motorhome6 on February 08, 2009, 05:36:41 PM
I have a stock oil pan on a 454 motor  that i'm going to drop in my jet boat. I'm going to put a jet boat pan on first but with the motor now just sitting where it goes it looks like its almost going to sit real ,real close to the floor of the boat . the pan now is 7 3/4 deep. How much clearance do you usually end up with from the bottom of the pan to the floor of the boat. How deep is the average jet boat pan. I found an 8" deep pan but not sure if it will clear. It's hard to tell until i mount the motor. Can anyone give me some insight on this. I'm going on how the drive shaft lines up with the PTO  from the pump.   thanks Gary.   and yes Jim  I will rent your jig when I mount the motor to the rails....

Sounds like to me your going to have to reset the motor to clear the bottom, you only need a couple inch's off the bottom if that helps.

The motor in my boat only has enough room under the pan to slip my fingers between the bottom of the hull and the pan, it's a 10 quart Dooley jet boat pan and it uses a GM pan for the rear sump, the pan in the raceboat almost touched the pump intake bolt area (intake was welded in) it all depends on what hull, what the pump is in the boat and how the engine is set in the boat (close driveline, extended DL, double or single joint blah blah blah)

IMO a stocker should clear and I want to say they are normally about 8 1/4" deep from the rail...

Actually in the vast majority of installs  8' is almost setting on the intake casting 7 3/4 is perfect to allow absolute (slight interferance angle) alignment of the DL , this is all "factored with a standard 1310 DL , things get worse with sagging mounts and stringers  most jets with proper DL alignment and 7 3/4 pan depth end up with about 3/8 to 1/2 inch clearance We occasionally even counter sink the front intake nuts to gain sufficiant clearance Tom

.... and then theres "bounce and flex"  ;)

thanks guys for your responses I appreciate it. Tom ,my intentions were to pick one up from you . I like the gold pans  and found a Milodon for $200 w/ windage tray and pump like new and I know yours are black..........BUT I also know in the long run that what I get from you will fit and you will be there if I run into any problems and I don't need anymore headaches. And by the way your flat bottom you are selling is an AWESOME boat, I wish I had a pocket full of money. It would be in my driveway
