Title: Oil Pressure cutoff switch
Post by: vintage240zracer on September 27, 2014, 12:07:03 PM
93' 454 Indomar Magnum Engine - Stock
Anyone have a part number?  Mine is a 3 prong, only 2wires hooked up to hot side of electric fuel pump.  It is mounted under the wiring block.
I found some universal ones at Jegs-
Took a shit in the garage right before getting ready to launch. Just jumpered it for now. But a hr of troubleshooting to find problem and chase 3 different color wire spices and in-line fuse in the loom running to it-  :banghead:
Are you all running one or getting rid of this failure point?

It should have three wires.

I have an Echlin part number at home (division of NAPA) and will get it for you.

3-wire hooked up? HMM
Will need to get a mirror to look up under there. Guessing one is bypass while starting to turn fuel pump on? That's what I've seen on some diagrams.
1 more thing added to list for winter project.

thanks GT.

Correct, there should be a wire hooked up from the (I) terminal on the starter solenoid to the third (N.C.) terminal on the switch. This can greatly reduce crank times when the engine has been off for a while.

Looking for the part number now.

I use a Holley 12-810 on my 455. It says Faria on the case. I wired it to run the fuel pump while cranking.

Just a thought, the engine will run for a long time on just the fuel in the bowls when the fuel pump is killed by the low oil pressure switch.  I have never been a fan.

The oil pressure switch is a USCG requirement to kill the electric fuel pump if the engine dies.  It has absolutely nothing to do with protecting the engine. This is especially true on a closed engine deal.

What if the engine died because of a broken fuel line as an example? If it was on a mechanical pump motor,  the fuel stops when the engine does. No true on an electric, it can keep going until the tanks are empty creating the largest Mollotov Coctail you have ever laid eyes on.

Just a thought the other way. ;D

Well, that definitely sheds new light on the topic.

Thanks for the enlightenment.

good info to know-
Found the Standard part number  "ps-64"
Will be hooking up properly to stay safe for sure-

Now for the next question- Is the oil port on the back part of the block behind the manifold and by the distributor a Metric thread on a gen 5/6 block?
Mine has a adapter if I remember properly- Should have take a picture  :banghead:

Can some one tell me what size the oil port is on the back of the block behind the intake rail? The oil switch I have I know had a bushing adapter.
The oil pressure switch looks 1/4 npt- I am pretty sure by filter (stock location) they are 1/4 npt maybe 3/8 npt?- My poor picture taking
Looking to get some fittings before the trip out Friday and the boat is already there-
Look forward to meeting you all Sat-

I believe it to be 1/8" FMT, so you may need an 1/8"MPT to 1/4"FPT adapter (or part number 3200X4X2)

Thanks GT for the info as it was spot on-
So the saga of the oil pressure was solved and a few things verified on several forums I was reading and gauge manufacture who says do not put sender in the port by the filter.
BBC V Block
1) Oil pressure sender was located at the filter location can give false readings - moved to port behind intake manifold and stayed steady. Verified with mechanical gauge as well.
2) Verified the oil by pass valve needs the GM upgrade or block off. Will do this for the new motor.
3) Learned that the by-pass is rated for pressure differential not actual pressure.
