Title: Oil pressure dropped to zero
Post by: Steveo909 on March 28, 2018, 03:58:54 PM: 460 with 2 hours on it. Put it on the lake today to get ready for summer. Was running fine, temps were good, oil pressure at 65-70 then I noticed the engine start to get a little sluggish. Noticed oil pressure was at ZERO. Shut it down and let it cool off thinking maybe the oil foamed up. Fired it up again, no strange noises, oil pressure still zero. Has a brand new Melling oil pump and ARP shaft. Dooley 10 quart with windage tray. Any thoughts?

My first thought was bad gauge or sender. But the fact I noticed the engine start to labor a little bit is what concerns me.

Yeah I do. I have the bit that fits over the shaft to prime the oil system. Have you ever seen a new pump fail?

My money would be on a failed roll pin in the distributor. It needs to come apart.. :thumbdown:

If there was a failed pin in the distributor, wouldn’t it have not fired right back up?

You are correct, I got ahead of myself... I only subconsciously caught that you restarted it. You will likely have a Fusilli noodle pump shaft...

No. Fires up and sounds fine. Just no oil pressure.

That's the part that is concerning, that it was struggling. Damn those Ford's. Hopefully it is something simple and caught in time.

If I remember most 385 series oil pumps have a cotter pin that retains it, I just do not remember. Preoiling the motor will tell you a lot. If it started to get sluggish I personally would pull the filter and cut it open. You might even do a bearing check to be safe.

Prior to this, I took my boat to B&D marine in havasu to have the carb, and timing dialed in. He also suggested to adjust the valves so I said go ahead. Long story short, the poly locks were left finger tight, one of the lifters popped out of its bore, hence no oil pressure. Going to pull the manifold and check the extent of the damage. Doesn’t look bad so far. Hopefully cam is OK and no metal floating around.
