Oil pressure dropped to zero
« on: March 28, 2018, 03:58:54 PM »
460 with 2 hours on it. Put it on the lake today to get ready for summer. Was running fine, temps were good, oil pressure at 65-70 then I noticed the engine start to get a little sluggish. Noticed oil pressure was at ZERO. Shut it down and let it cool off thinking maybe the oil foamed up. Fired it up again, no strange noises, oil pressure still zero. Has a brand new Melling oil pump and ARP shaft. Dooley 10 quart with windage tray. Any thoughts?

Pull the distributor and hand crank that shaft and see if you get oil to the rockers.

Be sure to tape the socket to the extension so you don’t have to go fishing

My first thought was bad gauge or sender. But the fact I noticed the engine start to labor a little bit is what concerns me.

I am going to do that tonight. Hopefully I caught it in time and didn’t spin a bearing.

If you have a pneumatic ratchet that will work great

Yeah I do. I have the bit that fits over the shaft to prime the oil system. Have you ever seen a new pump fail?

Personally no. You’ll know if you spun something. It making some noise is concerning but not fatal if you caught it I’m time.

Check the pin in the distributor as well when removed.

The slightest little bit of debris will lock a pump up solid.. Did you weld the pick up tube? Did you set the pan to pick clearance? Did you set the distributor gear depth?

My money would be on a failed roll pin in the distributor. It needs to come apart..

If there was a failed pin in the distributor, wouldn’t it have not fired right back up?

You are correct, I got ahead of myself... I only subconsciously caught that you restarted it. You will likely have a Fusilli noodle pump shaft...

Does it have a miss or crank uneven? Could have hucked a lifter...

And only because I saw the after effects, did you torque the oil pump bolts?

No. Fires up and sounds fine. Just no oil pressure.

Where did you notice the noise coming from top or bottom?

It wasn’t a noise specifically. It was just like the engine was working harder than it should have been at the RPM I was running.

The funny thing is the damn thing ran great for 34 years before I decided to rebuild it and put aftermarket parts in it.
