Title: Oil pump pick up, and oil level question?
Post by: SLCKREG on April 26, 2009, 07:54:00 PM: Ummm...I'm about to swap out my oil pan , and they say use the pick up that goes with the pan. Well.. if the pick up that is on there(for the orig. pan) has proper clearance(from the bottom) , why change it?? Btw what is proper clearance, 3/8" ish? As far as oil level... I've been told to tilt the pan to about the angle of the engine(as it sits in the boat) and then fill it up to the bottom of the windage tray. Does that sound about right?? :P

Post by: IRRebel on April 28, 2009, 08:46:29 AM: Kinda confused about this. Did you just swap out the pan for the same pan? Go from front sump to rear sump or vice-versa?, or go with a big dealio like a Dooley or Milodon?

Post by: SLCKREG on April 28, 2009, 09:16:58 AM: Basicaly put a motor together but my existing pan the windage tray wouldn't clear my stroker crank. So I'm currently running withe no windage control what so ever. I picked up a nice, new to me pan, with full kick out windage built into the pan, scraper, screw in dip stick, ect. The new pan came with a pick up, but if (repeat if) the existing pickup(that's welded on) is O.k clearance wise, I ASSUME I can just leave it on there???? Also I'm told to fill the pan up before it's installed to find it's capacity, mark the dipstick,but I haven't got a clue how far up to fill it???? If it will help I'll attempt to put a pic of it up.

Post by: YumaJet on April 28, 2009, 02:19:59 PM: As far as oil lvel goes, when you change the oil, and add the correct amount of oil, mark the dipstick. I added about a quart too much last month, and my dipstick measured that it was full. With it being full, the oil pressure was about 55-60.

I go to change the oil last week, add the correct amount and one more for good measure to compensate for the oil filter and it measured between empty and full on my dipstick. Now my oil pressure is back where it should be at, 65-70.

Post by: SLCKREG on April 28, 2009, 04:38:41 PM: Thanks yuma "correct oil amount" is part of what I'm trying to determine. Here is a pic of the pan fwiw, the guy that sold me the pan said to fill it up to the bottom of the tray, I guess that's what I'll do.

Post by: GT Jets on April 28, 2009, 05:09:05 PM: FWIW, and for general info only, big blocks will "hang" about 1 1/2 to 2 quarts while running at speed...So if your thinking that's where the oil level will be while running, it wont.

I would say that your methodology is good though, will be plenty of oil and will not be overfull...

Sometimes you can shim the windage tray with a washer and still have enough threads on the main cap stud if you use a jamb nut. That probably would have been more helpful before you bought another pan.

Here is the pickup that came with the new pan. A) I'm not sure what the 2 holes in the plate are supposed to bolt to. B) I'm thinking if the pickup that's on the pump now doesn't have clearance issues, why not run it?? Anyone??

Post by: jet boat performance on April 28, 2009, 08:23:18 PM: Kreg we fill the pan with clean mineral spirits to the underside of the tray and call it "capacity, minus filter" then fill after install and mark the stick as Yuma said , If I'm reading right your saying ? if the current sump PU is the rght depth can you run it ? we check theis with clay and a borescope for PU to pan clearance (critical) Where are you at now? the to holes on your PU look like theyare for two Oil pump bolts once secured it wont "give" which means if your not satisfied with the clearance you'll have to Bend ??? or "shim to adjust" Wrong PU to pan bottom can cause areation or "vortex" issues Call me if you need help Tom

I assume I'll be o.k. clearance wise, only because both pans are just over 7" deep according to the tape measure. Assuming the pickup is set right currently. I'm planing on checking with clay or playdough or something. Thanks for the info.
