I use lucas oil 20-50 or redline 20-50 because of the zinc contents. most conventional oils dont have much in there. I use baldwin filter or wix racing filters. either way you should be just fine going from 30 to 40. ive always ran 20-50 in every boat motor ive ever owned.

Yeah edelbrock makes a zinc additive, I use valvoline racing 20w50 because it has a lot of zinc in it .

I just use about 3oz. of Comp Cams brake in lube with the oil change.. you can have too much too...
Depending on if the engine your talking about has anything special going on, I would have zero issues running 40 wt.

You can also use ZDDP in ur oil for the zinc! That's what's in the VR1 I also recommend running 20/50!

Chevron Delo
Vr1
Rotella
Tell u the truth most west coast stuff is made at Rlop Richmond lube Oil Production at Chevron.
95 percent of the bottle in whichever brand u buy with the rest are additives and u end with say Castro GTX.
That being said Mobile is top tierand they have the highest standard oil as far as lube oils go
Amsoil wouldnt compete in diesel additive test with 15 other brands so I lost thier respect. How u gonna act having adds in ever mag u can think of and not compete in testing to show what u got.
Anyway like everybody should know by now flat tappett = Add zink

I will have to investigate as to why Amsoil would not agree to a test. I have been using and selling the stuff since 1995 and to tell the truth, I have never once had any ill effects from the stuff. The only time I had a customer complain was when he used some of the Diesel injector cleaner and it immediately plugged the fuel filter to the point where the engine would not run. Turned out, the tank was so contaminated with old crap that it was amazing it even ran to start with.
As for the "Add zinc" comment, if the oil you are using already has adequate ZDDP, adding more does more harm than good. The Phosphorous count has a lot to do with it. As an example, I wouldn't simply add "Zinc additives to an oil change of Brad Penn Racing oil.
Not a personal attack, just trying to keep the fact afloat.
GT
As soon as I have some information on the testing thing I will post it up.
-
By the way, I can show you that modern Rotella and Delo are under the same environmental restrictions as any other automotive motor oil. There is nothing making Delo or Rotella different in the ZDDP content.
The specs change very often and negative changes are never advertized for obvious reasons.
GT

What is recommended for ZDDP content?
Thanks,
Joe

Hey GT, did you mean to say you wouldn't simply add zinc to Brad Penn oil?

To clarify
Any brand oil unless mom and pop brand is great
A few unit Managers from a certain oil company have mentioned another sets the bar for lube oil however the biggest company in California is a close second and makes most west coast stuff thats in the majority of oil on the shelf
Amsoil is very popular however I think its weak they wouldnt compete in a test in which a 3rd partt tester tested about 20 different diesel additive brands just to see who really gives u bang for your buck. Nothing to do with boats I just thought kinda chicken shit
Rotella is good
Delco is excellent
I use to not care about what gas I got. Till i saw valves in my engine lab. Go Techron.
I like to run same oil all the time to keep consistancy but its just a thing I have in my head.
Forgot what this tread was about
oh yeah long story short flat tappet bump sticks like zink.

The gasoline question yes and no
Even gas at a Chevron could be from anywhere BUT sounds funny but a Chevron with an Extra Mile is a corporate station and it is ONLY Chevron fuel used. The Techron is added to the Fuel tanker as it leaves the Refinery and the Techron is only in the corporate station.
Yes they are all in bed basically with each other. They use same Catalyst Chevron sells to all of em all over the world and they all will work in our motors. But some burn cleaner. Some have better cetane ratings in Diesel. Some just give us the minimum. They all rip us off. 10 years ago the gas tanker equaled 500 dollar profit but that was before years of record breaking profits...
-
With the additions of the new catalyst installs on all Diesel engines, the added ZDDP is quickly becoming the modern day leaded gas. It makes these catalysts less effective by causing glazing of the catalytic materials.
That being said, just because Rotella and Delo used to have a good dose of ZDDP, does not necessarily mean it still does. Mainly because it does not.
What is recommended for ZDDP content?
Thanks,
Joe
Joe, from everything I have read and have been told by the "experts" a 1,200 PPM ZDDP content is used as a baseline, many high quality zinc fortified racing specific engine oils contain 1,800 PPM It is my humble opinion that any more is a waste and should not be used. The phosphorous content is what drives the ability to keep the zinc contents reasonable.
Lower phosphorous, lower zinc.
Jet Fever, I doubt seriously I will get a response to the e-mail I sent to Amsoil tech. about the additive testing, but am trying to find out.
My suspicion is that it was a "Pay to participate test" whereas advertizing is provided after the results are finalized. Amsoil will not under any circumstances be involved in those types of studies.

Yamaha Ring Free and Johnson Evinrudes Carbon Guard are basicall versions of Techron. The stuff works wonders, especially in two stroke applications, or a fat running Big Chevy/Ford MOPAR.... :sly:

Gt I don't know why they declined just thought wow they are probly first one that comes to mind to people and they didnt put up
I learned it when learning about low sulfer Diesel that is at our pumps
My 06 LBZ wasnt meant to run that stuff so I run the additives to keep the fuel system lubed.
The new diesels try to kill NOX and all kinds of stuff.
The diesel gets refined now to lower Sulfur content and strip the lube quality of the fuel. 07 up ur good.

Just bought this oil additive supposed to be good for the zinc hopeing some one can chime in and say yah or nay before I put it in
