Ballast resistor. It is for reducing the coil voltage on the ignition system......

Do I need it?  The terminals are worn off which means I have no power to the coil and it won't start...  I just got a battery yesterday and am anxious to just hear it run for a sec!

More of a current absorber than anything else, they are really only required when the key is on and the engine is not running while the contacts are closed. Otherwise the coil is a big resistive heater. If left in the on position, the coil will continue to heat up until it blows like a scary volcano spewing red hot oil everywhere. The ballast resistor eats up this current converting the current to heat.

Witch way ? Ceramic or this type ? Where's the 40 bucks better spent ?

They all work basically the same way, this is just a "nicer piece", they do the same exact job, the only difference is the aluminum is the heat sync, not the ceramic.

You could run it without it for a short time, just be sure to buy another one and replace it straight away. You could also look into simply picking up an internally resisted ignition coil... You can rid of the resistor forever. Likely will cost roughly the same dough. Hard to say.

Points only use about 6-8 volts to operate, so the ballast resistor reduces the 12 volts of the motors electrical system down to that. Otherwise the points would probably burn up. I can't see the picture very well of the one you have, but I suspect it is a "heavy duty" style for the harsh bumping/ wave environment of a boat and a heat sink. The ceramic one would work, but would most likely crack prematurely or crumble because of that. You can also use an internally resisted coil.

The points don't care, the coil does.... The reason the points normally fry is because the condenser was sized for the 9 volts... Bigger capacity condenser and I could run 50 volts through them. FWIW an internally resisted coil gets the full monty but switches on the negative (ground side) of the coil, so it deals with the same 9 volts.

I am not sure these are any more heavy duty, but it would stand to reason that it would be a little tougher than the non potted ceramic ones, the potted ceramic deals are virtually indestructible.

Always considered these more of a "oooh look, shiny!" type deal...LOL

See.... We always Learn something new everyday!! I was always under the impression the primary and secondary windings that since are separated internally in the coil, that the coil absorbed the 6 volt ballasted reduced power and upped its current for the plugs to fire, and then the points received the reduced ballasted 6 and fired away, while the cap absorbed and built current up internally for the next point break. I'm just a "shade tree" builder and ALWAYS learn and want to keep learning....thanks GT

That's true, I was just baseing it on that "most" parts stores sell the square ceramic style to customers, and that mounting the ceramic with the normal single bolt in the center and the bouncing and bumping a boats environment is in would crack/ break it at the worst time in the middle of the lake.

Anybody use a Pertronics conversion around here?  I have one in my '32, and one in one of my Impala's and am happy with them, but ALWAYS keep a set of points and condenser in the globe box "just in case"!!
 Not sure how they would fare out in the water though, but just a suggestion. I'm doing an early 70's 460 build with my jet, so I have an early Mallory YC distributor with a Pertronics kit, for the reliability of electronic ignition, and the looks of '70's performance parts....just another suggestion?!?!

No idea, came with the boat...  It says Premium Perform... under the mount and at the bottom it says use with external resistor

Mallory, Accel, MSD, all have internal resistor coils. Look at your current resistor and see if the ohm rating is printed on it somewhere, and just get a coil with the same specs. and you will be good to go.
