Title: olds 455 dizzy help
Post by: 75Hustler on May 01, 2012, 07:03:10 PM: Ok so i pulled my mallery points dizzy to replace it with a 2 wire hook up Pro Comp dizzy. This one runs no external coil, i guess its all under the cap. Im on TDC, rotor is pointing to number 1, new plug wires installed fireing in order 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2 counter clockwise. Turn her over and... bang, boom, pop, flame from the carb... no matter how much i adjust the dizzy it will not turn over???

Pulled the new dizzy, put the old points dizzy back in... and bam turned over on the first turn.

What could be the issue with the non points dizzy, what should i be checking?

Post by: obnoxious001 on May 01, 2012, 07:29:21 PM: My first thought was that you have it 180 degrees out,, because that certainly causes popping and the no run situation. If you were able to swap distributors without moving anything, than you probably have a problem with your Pro Comp distributor. A couple of years ago one of the guys at Chet Herbert told me about 50% of the Pro Comp distributors came back. That was in a discussion where I was telling him that we bought two for a dirt track car that I build engines for, one was bad out of the box, and the 2nd had only 1/2 a roll pin through the gear, since the hole did not line up properly.

Reading your post again, you state that firing order was counter clockwise, that is not correct. Starting with #1, you put the wires clockwise on the cap (viewed from top)

Oops,, my mistake for assuming GM would maintain some constancy. I have done countless big block Chevys, but never have done an Olds.

Post by: 75Hustler on May 02, 2012, 12:26:08 PM: Wow easy fix, looks like I had a loose ignition wire in the dizzy. Fired up now just need to throw the timing light on it :) one more fix down 50 more to go lol
