BBF best ignition set up

what ignition set up should i run, im not racing but i want a goot reliable set up.
i posted a pic of what i have now, it came of a motor i got for nothing, so im not sure if it works or not.
post a pic of you ignition set up and your opinions.

Mallory unilite with canister...the ballast is under the ski tow

I run an HEI style, I was able to ditch all that other crap hanging off my motor. But if you run an HEI make sure you carry spare parts, I keep a coil and a relay in my tool bag.

I found a ProForm HEI from JEGS for like $100 give or take.

Stick with the Unilite. Check to make sure it's the breakerless one, and check the coil. If the coil is part #29440 then you're golden, and eveything is compatible with a Hyfire box which would eliminate the ballast resistor altogether.

Brother, you scored pretty big on that motor! The intake, the ignition. Next I suppose you'll "discover" CJ heads on it..... :screwy:

When you  get it ripped down, if the rods are football head and any are salvageable, I could use a few.

I bought an hei from summit. It was a vacuum advanced one. I plugged the vacuum advance hooked one wire to the distributor and away I went. It was $119 shipped to my door. I know that speedway auto sells a little piece that will replace the vacuum advance canister with a knob you can turn to adjust total timing. HEI is the way to go.

Oh yeah, mine had a vac advance on it too. I ditched the entire vac cone on the outside and plugged the tube inside the cap, it looks much cleaner that way.

I run an HEI on mine also, it's easy and basic.  If you do some research you can probably find them for cheap, but if you have a unilite and all the workings to go with it then save the cash and keep what you have.  Why fix something if it ain't broke?  Do as I say, not as I do right!

I run an HEI, I had a unilite (hooptie lol) I got rid of all that junk as well. Its a mallory chevy stile with ford guts, I got it through summit (it is not marine lol) Also it has the parts to eliminate the vaccume advance as well... The nice thing is,,, (your all worked up and ready for the lake...then your sh!tty unilite craps out on you and you cant replace the parts that day) HEI..yu run to the local parts store & hey 10mins later... flip flops + big blocks + cold beer = party time

Recurved Ford Duraspark distributor and ignition box.  It's the least expensive of the American-made ignition systems and essentially as good as an MSD (actually, MSD distributors use the Ford Duraspark magnetic pickup coil and reluctor). Thus far, I know them to be proven to 2000+ horsepower and 200+ mph.

I really like most Mallory products; that being said, I'll never trust a Mallory Unilite ignition system for as long as I live.

I have never heard this, Why ditch the vacum advance on HEI? and then where do you set your timing with no vacume advance?
