Tonight I looked at and tomorrow morning I'm going to go look at again a 18' v hull walk through with a Mariner 75 on it. The owner know's nothing about the boat and has had the boat out on the water only one time, which was with the previous owner at the "controls". The engine is supposed to be pretty fresh and when I pulled the cover off of it I believe it to be true. The last time the engine was run was Christmas vacation '06. It has a ? 5 ? gallon gas tank feeding the engine with the bulb thingy on it. I pulled one of the spark plug wires off of one of the plugs and the purple spark jumped about 1/2" !! so I believe the spark to be good. The damn thing wouldn't start. I pumped up the bulb thingy and after 20 or so pumps the bulb did get hard eventually, but if I walked away from the bulb got soft within 15 seconds. A friend of mine said that's OK because it just gets the gas to the carb. When the engine is cranking it sounds good and jumps around a bit which my friend told me probably means it has compression. The boat for it's year is really nice, has power trim and tilt, is big enough for my family, will be cheaper to use than a jet boat, and is cheap for what it is at $1,000 OBO. I think I'm going to spray starting fluid in it tomorrow morning provided I can find the carb(s) (?). I couldn't find a choke lever or button (?), uhmmm... ???

Pics please . Of the outboard of course . My dads had a choke button on the controls but I'm sure it was much older than the one your lookin at .

rod, if you need help give me a call 619-507-5925 Brian Starting fluid will help it. But the ball pump and gas will need to be changed. I can go with you maybe. Might have to bring my son.

Apparently if you push the ignition key in and hold it in while starting the engine you are turning on the electric choke! :o Turning on the choke does wonders for in helping to start an engine that hasn't been started in 5 months. ;D
So the boat ran great once I figured out how to start it. I think that BKPlesh told me how to turn on the choke but I'm not sure how I figured it out... ??? but I did (or was told) and the mo fo runs like a champ. I took it out on the lake for about 45 minutes.
It's a little bit slower than the average jet boat. ;) ;D
Sound hull, original gel coat, seats 7 (6 in the family), has a recently rebuilt Mariner 75 HP outboard, reasonably clean interior with no tears or rips, $1,000.00. ;D

We (2 adults and 4 teens) got to the lake at 8:00 AM, left the lake at 5:00 PM, at one point had an extra teen in the boat making it 7 total!! Ran like a champ ALL day long, used 16 1/2 gallons of gas, fast enough to pull a tube (with 6 in the boat!) and still be able to have fun with it.
Tops speed was around 30, maaayyybe 35, keeping the jet. ;) Actually, keeping both! ;D

The key in all of that is, WE HAD FUN ALL DAY LONG!!!!! Glad to see that you and the family had fun and were out on the water.

Now I'm one of those #%&*%#& guys screwing up SoCalJetBoats with outboards posts! >:D
What kind of maintnence does an outboard need? Any recomended books I should get? websites to visit? etc... My boat has this switch on the shifter/throttle that allows me to raise or lower the engine (by tilting it), what is that called? Power ____ ?
Any help would be appreciated (other than a jetter telling me to junk the outboard!).

Power _____? Is called TRIM

Could be a trim or trailing button. Maintenance, Once a year.(water pump, fuel filter, spark plugs, gear oil, lube it) Take a picture of it, best bet is trim button.

Do you want me to swing by and answer your question? OR hook it up and do a drive by. OR stop by my house and I will show you on my boat. But it looks like a ram for the trim. Haven't worked on those.

I broke into my own glove box today on the boat. I found the original owner's manual for the engine. :o
The mechanism I was trying to figure out is called "power trim and tilt". :)
The owner's manual for the engine lists all recomended oil change intervals, where it needs grease, the whole nine yards of the engine! Wiring diagrams, anything I would ever need to do to it. I'm stoked. I'm hoping to take it into the San Diego Bay tomorrow afternoon. 8) Then tomorrow evening flushing out the engine real good. Then on Saturday I'll want to take it to the lake to rinse off the trailer and hull real good. ;) It's tough work but someone has to do it. ??? ;D
