So my bbc runs bitchin but every once in a while on the lakes the boat comes out of the water when I'm on the gas pretty hard, the couple times I didn't let out of it it revved up then I let out, afterwards I get one pop outta the exhaust and it's all good again. Was thinkin about it today and when I get home I'm gonna pull the dist cap and see if there's a limiter in it, I don't wanna hurt the motor so just lookin for any info.

What kind of distributor do you have?
There are several ways to put a limiter on a motor.

I was thinkin lean pop like the mech pump can't keep up or maybe even fuel pressure too high when it revs that high... I've run it wide open with no pops but if I get in n out of it every once in awhile it will do it, the other 98% of the time it's tits..

I don't know if the ignition module will swap out on the hei like points style does but Mallory and Pertronix both make a points replacement module with a built in Rev limiter .

Do you have a flat tappet cam shaft? If you do, while your at it pull all the rocker arms and pushrods, intake manifold and check everything out. Check the pushrods for straightness, rocker arms for wear or damage and lifters for broken parts. When you put it back together, install a rev kit (this only applies to flat tappet cams).
What you did was float the valves like Ralph says.
Do it enough times and you will spit a pushrod and cause all sorts of havoc.
The Rev kit will keep the lifters in their perspective bores and keep the oil pressure in the engine until you can shut it down safely.

Not sure about the cam, all I know is what I could find from the block numbers, it's a mark 4 454 #10069286 short deck with oval port heads.

The first time it happened that's exactly what I figured happened was floated the valves, since then I've been VERY careful to not do it again, not havin a limiter sucks when you're runnin your buddy's and pullin on em then gotta let out...😣👎👎

Panther pumps tends to rev up quick when the come out of the water. I would think you are floating the valves.

One of the other problems that nobody has touched on is the jolt to the rotating assembly when you load the pump again.

I run a Cdi box with my hei it has a built in rev limiter and it's adjustable think I spent about a 140$ I've had about 5 years trouble free
