Title: PMGR Ford 460 Starter CCW?
Post by: Knightnight on August 22, 2021, 09:52:00 AM
My old starter gave out and looking to replace it with new one, possibly a PMGR (perma magnet one). I believe it needs to be counter clock wise, given the bevel on the left when the starter is facing up right.

Ford 460, starter has 2 mounting bolts, starter cone faces the bow, top mounted, 9 teeth on the starter sprocket.

Anyone link a replacement one that isn't going to break the bank?

Something like this?

Says standard rotation in description but I need counter clockwise I believe.

The 460 should be standard rotation, so having a starter beyond the bellhousing should turn the proper direction. Make sense? Anyways, it should be a phone call away to find out.

The 460 engine is clockwise crank rotation but the old starter gear seems to be ccw. The bevel looks to be on the left.

I found this starter and the description says "reverse rotation for standard 460". Not sure if the starter gear is ccw or not. Are starters sold based on engine rotation or the starters gear type?

I believe I need a ccw starter because the starter is on the rear facing the bow rather than facing the rear of the engine like most starters.

I just went with a normal stock one, for half the price of that CP performance. Last one lasted 40 years+, don't need overkill. I called DB but they didn't make a PMGR with the same compatibility.

When you replace your starter- throw new hardware in as well.  I was replacing a starter every season, and couldn't figure out why.  When the engine was on the stand- I chased the threads with a tap(3/8-16) and inspected the bolts.  Mine had ended up stretching, and even with blue loctite- they were backing out.  ARP makes some really nice fasteners for the starter.  I also upgraded to an IMI Hi-Torque starter, which has been a huge improvement.  Just make sure your threads/bolts are clean, add some blue loctite and torque them down to 25ft/lbs.
