Title: Popping
Post by: jrankin on March 02, 2017, 11:08:00 PM
Hey BBC guys. Got few questions. I'm getting a pop at about 3000 rpm. I have timing set to 14 int, 34 adv. 468 roller, stainless valves, springs, forged flat top pistons, crank, Rods. What plug should I be running. Motor is just broke in. Wondering if timing needs to be advanced more, or if I need hotter plug. Believe the plugs are 26. I'm running Plonix billet marine, and MSD blaster 2 coil, 750 Dave Lang built holly. Thanks in advance.

3000 rpm under load, or out of the water? Once it pulls past 3000 rpm the popping stops?

What power valve?

Off throttle

If it pops when you let off the throttle check your advance springs inside the distributor. Mine broke and that was the result. No spring and the advance mechanism was jumping back & forth.

Potentially a vacuum leak? Could be a sucked gasket.

Thought that too, replaced new intake and gaskets, thinking intake may have a crack. Only thing I can think of is vacuum off the carb to air filter. I should cap it instead of running it. That's pretty much last thing I can think of, besides maybe carb to small for motor now, or power valve to small. It's got me lost. Lol

Not feeling it. As far as the air filter thing.

What are you running for a distributor?

That's a great distributor.

What is this vacuum line to the air filter you speak of?

I can't get my had wrapped around it.

This sounds like your issue.

Like from the larger port" the base of the carburetor to the flame arrestor?

That's a negative Ghost Rider....

It's an ignition issue, ditch the Petronix unit, I had the same problem on my bbc engine. I installed the MSD marine box with their pro billet distributor and the problem was gone instantly.

Had one on the whitewater boat, ran one on the pull truck, put one on a buddies motor home used to sell the he'll out of them.

Unless something dramatic has changed, it's a pretty good piece.

Not going to get deep into this.  Just giving the guy a couple more things to check if what you said don't work.  Some people have no problems with them but I did not once but twice on two different engines.  It's is what it is some people like them some don't.

The biggest issue with the hall effect distributors is when the voltage is low it you try to use a high resistance or internally resisted coil.

So my alternator is bad, I do have Batt charger on it. So could be I'm not enough voltage, got a new alternator on the way. I'll try that first, before spending 1000 bucks. Thanks again guys I'll let ya know.

The electronic ignition systems are designed around 14.5 volts.... So absolutely.
