Title: PTO question

I was reading the thread about the stater issue someone wss recently having. Someone mentioned having a PTO for a flywheel or a flexplate. I never knew there was a difference.  How can I tell which one I have? I am still putting my project together so I havent purchased a flexplate yet. Its a BBC going into a mini cruiser. I have the PTO but is it for flexplate or flywheel?

the PTO for a flexplate has a register to the inside of the crank that sticks through the flexplate.   the PTO for a flywheel has a register for the inside diameter of a flywheel. its what centers the PTO.

The problem with fitment has three  issues.

One, the thickness of a flex plate is less than a flywheel.  This moves the engine closer or farther from the pump.

Two, the bolts for a flywheel will be too long for a flex plate.

Three, the locating dowel in the crank will be too long for a flex plate.

All these things can be modified to work with each other.

The difference will be pretty obvious.

Can I tell by looking at or taking a measurement somewhre on the PTO if it is designed to work with a flywheel or flexplate

If you have a 6" pretty close (caliper) you can measure it to see if the dowel will bottom out and whether or not the centering boss will fit in the crank or the flywheel.
