Plug Wire Advice

Ok, The old BBF is starting to go back together and all new wiring, including the spark plug wires. I'm not one of those guys who just throws stuff together when it comes to wiring so I'd like to get some advice as to the best way to run the plug wires. Here's what I've got so far.

You'll probably want to shorten those wires a bit.

I had a similar set-up on a BBC for a very short while, make sure you have enough wire to pull the wire off of a plug. Your wires that run along with your oil pan can be held up with an adel clamp. Nice color choice, I mean if you can't have a Chevy and all you might as well paint your Ford Red.

Wires are long enough to pull from plugs. The RED was NOT my choice and will be powder coated Ford Blue next fall. The guy who rebuilt the motor was told to paint it blue but he screwed up. Oh well, a task for next fall and winter. I've got to get the thing off the engine stand and the bell housing installed then the starter so I can finish off that wiring that runs along the oil pan. I'll have some clamp brackets to hold the convoluted tubing in place. That stuff is really nice to work with.

Now on to figuring out how to make the distributor connections neat and clean looking.

90 degree boots will look fine=keeps wires down instead of sticking up==cleaner look

i dont know what happen on those pictures =will figure it out and try again=doug

I'm using 90* boots. I think I've got it figured out, will know for sure if I screwed it up tomorrow.

Well, after it has all been said and done. I sat down last night and came up with a plan. It may not be the best plan but I guess it's going to do, now that I've cut all the wires to length.

It looks a hell of a lot nicer than it did when I picked up the boat. Anyway, I think so.

Header photos will follow next for clearance view.

Might be too late to change setup, but I've always liked the wires below the headers, cooler air since heat rises.
Does anyone else think the smae way, or is showing the wires off the way to go?

Well, it's too late unless I want to give Summit another $65.00 for new wires and then re-cut them. I've got 5" from wires to closes header pipe and this is in a '75 Miller and the motor sits up high enough that it should get enough air.

I've always liked them under the headers but you did a great job and everything super clean .

Thanks BJ, I HATE messy wiring and always have. Next comes the plumbing. I hope to make it look nice too. Summit has 5/8" blue heater hose and that would look great IF they had formed 90* ends. Oh well.... I'll just have to make due. I think I've got enough clearance to keep the wires from burning too.

Have to agree... the layout looks killer, plus with that much room and the wires running thru the aluminum rail
they should be alright. Plus now everyone gets to see the attention to detail you got into it

Thanks Rebel. There's more to come. I hope to mount the bell housing today, get it drilled and mounted t the stringers and then finish up the engine wiring. Then I'll work up the harness to the dash. I do think the plug wires are going to be just fine. The loom will act as a heat sink and dissipate the heat and the wire insulators will keep them cool.

I ran mine under my headers as well BBC. I machined and welded some spacers on the back side of flat stock and then located threaded holes in the block and used the maid-for you wire holdes. I counter bored the flat/spacers for socket head cap screws. This took time but worth it. Your job on the wires is clean GAWNCA.

Thanks TJS, You did a nice, clean job yourself. The rest of my wiring is just as clean and I hope to have some photos up later on today. I'll have the engine side all done except for the fuel sending units. I've got one tank still full of gas and it's going into my SUV so I can remove the tanks, install the sending units and then run the wires. DAMN, that reminds me, I've got to get a rear or anchor light today and install that and run those wires as well. Always something more to do. Bilge pump too!!
