Title: Rebuild and 460 Ford or pull it for a 383 chevy
Post by: JetBoatJesse on June 21, 2013, 11:37:34 AM
Took The Duce out Monday, out of the no wake zone I started to hear a loud ping noise , not a rod knock but kinda. So I pulled into a cove checked the oil,  it was good. Got out the tube for the kids,  I thought if its going to go they better get some fun before she blows. 15 minutes into tubing the sound was getting louder.  The oil pressure gauge sucks so I really don't have a clear idea of the real pressure it said about 15 pounds at 3200. So I called it a day for tubing and spent the rest of the day on the beach...The trip back to the ramp the sound was there and loud but it would roll in and out, not piston speed.  So still not sure. Pump maybe?  I know what a rod knock sounds like, been there had that.  This is different.  But it is the motor, Im a Chevy man by trade and heart, plus the garage full of stuff for a Chevy. I can do a vortec headed HT383, and pick up some mainifolds,  or pull the 460 out and go into it.?? Any thoughts

I'm there to bro, I just rebuilt my 460 bbf. Last winter. It's for sale if you want. 2000 for entire motor. Carb to oil pan. All the best parts. Comp cams, MSD, ported doves, stealth intake. Made 515 hp on dyno.  I'm thinking I'm going LS2 swap!

I'd go with the small block chevy any day...unless you really need 500lb/ft of torque. Otherwise no cheaper HP than you can make with the small block.

Chevys (as you well know I'm sure) are notorious for the ability to make huge power and cheap. My boat has a very crisp running BBF 460 too. But I will not pass up on an opportunity to go BBC.

The 460 parts are too pricey. Just my .02

Although I like my SBC's, In your case, I'd build a BBF.
The money you save on building your sbc parts, is gonna be spent on logs/headers, different 4pt. mounts, driveline, etc...refresh that 460 and have fun with it
I went thru a similar thing 3 years ago, BUT, I had a fresh BBC under the bench, logs, Intake, carb, 4pt mounts, driveline, starter, alt, etc, AND the 460 ford was severely damaged, I think #4 rod thru the side...so it got pulled
Oh, and @ 1 hp/cu.in. ... 383hp vs 460 hp?

Just my $.02
