Title: Recommend a distributor?
Post by: Knightnight on April 08, 2021, 04:28:40 AM
I have a prestolite d3jl-1200g distributor on a ford 460. It is currently wired from distributor to ignition coil to a ballast resistor. Looking to replace it with newer unit that has male prongs and is updated (non-worn out advance springs/etc). Finding parts for the old distributor is rather difficult. Ideally looking to spend around $300 ish for a new distributor? Mechanical advance, marine rated of course.

You can't go wrong with Davis United (DUI) dizzys.
Even coast guard approved.
Basically a GM Hei adapted to a 460, Gm parts available at any parts store.
Run the lightest advance springs.

All I run on my junk is Gm Hei, vacuum advance deleted. Solid and reliable.

Just my $ 0.02.

I found them but it appears not coast guard approved per their website?

https://performancedistributors.com/product/marine-dui-distributors/.

I select 7000rpm version, black for ford 460. I will only ever spin ~5000rpm so probably a little overkill.

Mine are all GM Hei used units that have been repaired and modified, but are not uscg approved, although I don't have an engine cover either. With an engine cover, I'd opt for s uscg unit.
Pertronix makes a pickup retro fit available for most any dizzy.

I installed an MSD marine ready to run on my 460 about three years ago best investment I’ve made as far as ignition so far.
