Title: Rookie boater with stupid questions
Post by: ElGringoLoco on February 17, 2017, 07:34:35 AM
Hey guys, I recently found out that the heads on my 460 are performance turds. I can't remember the DV numbers, but it comes back to a late-70s Lincoln, with smog equipment.  Can you guys recommend a set of heads that aren't dog crap? Thanks.

What's the specs on your engine? What are you looking to do HP wise? Budget?

Motor is stock, no head or cylinder work done. Not looking for wazoo hp. The boats a 19' Eliminator Formula, so it's more of a family wagon. It's got Hardin logs & risers, and a Berk JC pump with an A impeller. Budget is flexible, but not looking to spend more than the boat is worth.

I bet you're nowhere near the performance potential of the heads you have.  I would try not to listen to bench racers and select the appropriate heads for a legitimate build.  Just changing the heads probably won't net any more performance and could actually produce less horsepower.

When you get to the point where you are running > 10:1 compression and a cam with > .650 lift, then you will want to look at choosing an appropriate set of heads.

I think you have a lot of areas where you can improve performance before buying new heads.

Cheers,

Joe

Totally agree, the log exhaust will limit you more than the heads, how well does the boat perform now? How much more are you looking to gain? That's the better question.

We've had it up to around 55 in chop with 30 gallons of fuel, and I still had more pedal. Realistically, I'd love to see it do 85ish.

From 55 to 85 is no small task.

Honestly speaking, the heads are your smallest concern.

It will take putting the boat on a diet, making about 600hp, some pump work and a pretty big wad of cash.

The basic questions.

What hull?
What pump?
What exhaust system (who's logs)
Where do you boat?(rivers, lakes?)

And most importantly, what's your budget?

I thought about that too, after I had posted it. PO said he had it up to 70 before, but I'm skeptical about that. It's an 18.5' Eliminator Formula. The pump is a Berkeley JC, with an A impeller, and Places diverter. Logs are Hardin, not 100% sure on the model. We're in Fort Worth, so we will be running lakes from Arkansas to Oklahoma, and with any luck- Louisiana too.

You have a hull capable of your goal (my personal opinion).

That hull will require, among other things, a droop to gain some bow lift. This means getting a split bowl pump, essentially converting it to a JG.

It will also be a good idea to install a shoe and a ride plate on the intake, a loader will be important.

To support the extra bow lift, I feel you will need to make in excess of about 500 horse power. Not impossible to do, but the logs will limit you on camshaft selection. You could get away with a bit more lift and duration with something like jacketed headers or high performance manifolds and tips.

You will then want to focus on the weight and weight distribution. Keeping a majority of the weight rearward and centered. As low as humanly possible.

70 is not out if the question if the load is light and it's trimmed out properly, it will need to be freed up, maybe a small riffle on the water, no wind.

If the boat does an honest 60 or so now, in thinking you need to spend $2,500-$5,000 depending on how much of the work you can do yourself.

Biggest thing to keep on "the list" is fun and reliability, as soon as you lose either one, you have a race boat. Lol

Thanks Glenn, you've given me a lot to chew on.

Glenn is right, it will be pricey. If you got the coin then do it but otherwise just enjoy the boat for what it is. And maybe look into a lighter boat with the engine and pump that will get you 70-80. Having a cruiser and river racer would be kick ass. Just a thought.

If they are D3VE -A2A "smogger" heads then I had a well ported set on my boat and it went 85 mph gps without shoe or ride plate.

Whether you use what you have or swap out for a different pair of heads depends on a lot.  If you are trying to get power from an OEM bone stock engine then a head swap to a different set that will give you more compression (etc) might be the way to go indeed.

Perfect. If I could keep the same heads, that would make my life easier. I'm in good with a few machine shops out here, so I would rather port em then replace em. Can you shoot me a PM with specs you went with? These ford motors are new to me.
