how much of a pain in the ass is it to R/R a BBF starter? i bought a hi-torque starter from long beach a few weeks ago and this weekend im putting in all the new goodies getting ready for blythe. I just wanted to know if there were any tricks of the trade and if there is stuff i should look out for.

2 bolts, 2 wires, how much easier do you want? Bottom bolt can be a pain working around the stringer but ain't NOTHING like changing the spark plugs on a V-10 Ford Van........................ >:D Just break out a universal and every ratchet extension you own, it'll be fine.
Of course, you could just remove the engine and then it's real easy!
Don't overtighten the bolts, the bell housing is aluminum. 20 ft pd's is prolly high!

cool that sounds easy enough. i just remember changing the starter in my old boat with a 454 and that was a pain in the ass.

I'm pretty sure that electric motor armatures have a Lead & Lag in their design. This would mean that an armature for the reverse rotation starter would have it's armature leading in the oppiosite direction of a standard rotation starter. Simply reversing polarity on a standard rotation starter so as to use reverse-rotation mounted might not give you a starter motor that has the necessary torque to start your engine. I'm not positive on this so let us know how your attempt works out for you.

Paul is right on the reverse rotation deal. I was under the impression you were simply replacing the existing normal starter with a high torque version. Did I miss Something? One thing though, GM starters can be converted easily to spin the other way, GT can tell you how. Fords, not so easy, kindof a cluster **** to do those.
Learned that from Glenn a while ago, which is why my starters are still mounted normally!
To be perfectly honest though, and I've said this before, why top mount a boat starter? I get the feeling people think that the water will do damage, but how many of these things work and work and work, infallably, in say Buffalo NY when they're packed all around with melting snow in January in Ohio or New York, or in Florida or Oregon getting soaked with water from the street in the constant rain? They are mounted on the bottom on all cars you know......
These things have worked in conditions a jet boat cannot imagine, yet we feel the need to keep them dry. Why?
Leave well enough alone. The starters we have today have performed, IMO, extremely well given what extremes have been thrown at them, and have done so for what, 50 years or better? Using an automotive starter in a boat? I say no problem! Only run in the summer, gets not even 1/4 as wet as it normally would in daily street use, leave it alone!
Just my thoughts......

i was just changing the old shit 45 lbs starter with a new 5lbs high torque version. i think that lakes got confussed with the "R/R" that was remove/replace sorry old navy acronyms(sp) coming out. well got the starter in on saturday and it was simple. thanks for the help
