Safe RPM's
« on: August 27, 2008, 01:36:46 PM »
Whats a safe RPM to be at? I have a 468 bbc.

I usually run mine at about 3000-3500 rpm's. I'd like the engine to last, so I don't gun it too much.  ;D

Another question I had is, I've seen headers with the oil drain plug from the valve covers, but mine aren't like that. I have a standard oil breather from my valve cover, and it gets alittle too much oil, so it's dripping alittle throughout the day. Should I just use the oil breather with the spout and use a hose so the oil could leak on the bottom of the transon, rather than the headers? It's not much, and I'm talking about a few drips.  Maybe I'm just a worry wart.  :-\

i run my boat at 4-5000rpm.. i was actually checking this post to see if my boat is going to blow up soon.

as far as the oil thing. are you running a breather or a pcv valve. oil was leaking like crazy on our flat bottom. we put a breather and pcv valve that vented back to the carb/intake and it relieved the pressure from the motor and the oil leaks stoped for the most part.

anyway hope that helps but like i said i am no expert.

The nicer you are to your motor , the longer it SHOULD last . Not proven though . I was real nice to mine for a long time and it has held up .

The pan-e-vac system eliminates the drip on the valve covers . It's SUPPOSED to pull pressure from your crank case and help seal up your rings better creating some ponies . Not a bad idea in any case I think . My .02 though  :-\

im using a standard breather. it had a pcv valve breater, but it wasnt hooked up to anything and just dripped onto my header. im sure just like my 350 sbc in my car, i should just connect it to the carb. i figured if its running good the way it is, i didnt want to tinker with it too much. everytime i mess with something, it breaks and i take it to my mechanic.  :screwy:

i hear you on that. the pan evac system sounds good. i'll have a buddy make the cut into my headers and then chrome them at the end of the season.

i cruise it around 3k-3500. It starts to move good around 4500-5500. I have 2 tall breathers on each valve cover and I have no leaks.

I cruise 3500-4000 and peg at 5400 WOT on an A cut.

i am not sure if panter makes different impellers. i am fine with my 5k rev limit. i dont need to go anyfaster. the boat hauls all kind of shit.. so that is more important to me. i would rather be comfortable then fast. but that is just cause i cant afford to have comfort and speed right now.

i do have a blower for a bbc at the shop. i wonder how much that would help me?

I cruise at about 3500 and WFO is 4800 with an AA.  Its a 468 BBO and if an Olds can take it, I'm sure a big bad bow tie can.  8)

How fresh or tight is your pump KC . 4800 seems like alot of RPM's for an AA imp. I could be way off on this .

I have about 10 - 15 hours on the pump and engine.  It doesn't have a loader (yet) so it may be slipping.  I was told that I will drop about 100 rpm when I put a loader on it.  (I am actually thinking about turning it down to an A and get the rpms up to about 5100 -5200)

What RPM is safe depends on how the motor is built. What kinda crank? Rods? Pistons?

On a BBC with a stock cast crank and rods, forged pistons mine has no problem turning 5400.

Cruise I usually hit 3500RPM which will get me to about 40mph depending on how much weight I have onboard.

Yuma You want to keep it "safe" treat it nice like Omar said and be conservative it will last longer , as John said alot depends on the engine and how/what it was built with,a small light boat with  a good working jet should maintain a minimum plane speed down as low as 3k ,the Jet (if working right) will actually limit back the motor to its HP unless you become airborn its not likley you see much over 5k anyhow depending on the motor build Tell us about the motor ,the internals and such ? I don't know much about the motor internals, only that the lower end was rebuilt earlier this year with "performance" parts and built by Vic VanHorns brother here in Yuma. The guy who owned the boat before I did, bent a rod, and I just don't want that to happen. At 3300 rpm, it rides at about 40 mph on gps. The motor sounds strong and am pleased with the performance. Do you still have manuel place diverters for $639?

Sounds about right. Probably running an A impeller. On an AB impeller mine hits 40mph at about 3500RPM.

YumaJet,
you got good stuff there, just would like a little love thats all, the amount of "bolt ons" available for that pump is endless, snoots, extenders, diverters (best bang for the buck IMO), shoes and ride plates ($), stuffers, loaders, inducers, wedges. You have a lot to work with there, do I see a set of "Step N Trim's" on there? Sounds like this thing had a porpoise problem to me, a Diverter will fix that and you could potentially pull those plates off and free up some speed, maybe... ???

If you think you may have a worn pump, it don't take too much to go through it and freshen it up, makes a difference if your planning on improving performance, the gain in fuel efficiancy is minimal though IMO, some small mods like a stuffer plate and a Diverter when you do go through it would be night and day different and won't break the bank too bad.

Good Luck with it.

I've had the boat for a few months and woundered why the other jet boats I've seen, didn't have the trims on the back. A PD has been on my eye for awhile.
