Help Setting Idle on my Holley 750 Please

Hey Guys,

Any tricks on setting the idle on my Holley 750? I just got it rebuilt and first time out, I had to set the Primary Idle Screw quite a ways down to get it to idle. Anything below 1000 RPM or so and it shook and didnt like it much. I didnt mess much with the idle mixture screws in fear of jacking something up. Any clues to get her dialed in? Whats my ideal idle with the 454, in the water with the drag from the pump? I dont think I can adjust it out of the water cause its just gonna change once I splash it right? Thanks!

Yes it will change when it gets wet but when it's dialed what you think it's idle on the trailer . Mines usually at 1200 rpm on the trailer . Dont set it too low , it's hard on the motor . Speedymopars is really good with carbs . I'll let him tell you how to do it correctly .

Most jet boats idle around 1000RPMs. Matter of fact some people idle them higher so that they don't have to keep their foot on the gas through the no wake zone.

Idle mixture screws...get a vaccuum gauge for this. You want to start by screwing the idle mixture screws all the way in, then back them out about 1 - 1 1/2 turns. As you're watching the vaccuum gauge, start with one screw and turn it in. If vaccuum goes up, keep going until the vaccuum starts to drop, then back it back out to obtain the highest vaccuum reading you can. Do the same with the other one.

Now that's an initial setting. Then hold the throttle at about 3500 for about 5-10 seconds, then let go of it to snap it back to idle. If it starts to die, then revs back up to idle, go out 1/4 turn on the mixture screws and try again. Keep doing that until you can rev it, then snap it back to idle and the engine falls down to idle smoothly without wanting to stumble or die on you.

Thanks guys for the tips, maybe Ill just keep it the way it is. Its right around 1100-1200 or so seems to be happy there. Jetaholic, where do I put the vacuum gauge? On the bottom of the carb with the manifold vaccum, just use one of those lines?

With some of the wonder lumpy camshafts we used to use in the raceboat, the idle quality sucked, they always needed to be 1200-1300 RPM in the water to be reliable, I started  (in 1994) drilling small holes in the primary and secondary butterflies (carb had four corner idle screws) to allow the idle air to enter without the butterflies being open, this allowed us to achieve a dead nuts idle at 1000 RPM and the throttle response off idle was astounding.  Be careful though, only do this if the butterflies are way open to get it to idle, the camshaft we were using was a mechanical flat tappet that pulled until about 6300 RPM, so this was a radical SOB.

The trick is to start out very small (use number drills) and keep screwing with it until it gets close.

Thats what I did anyway, if the idle mixture screws don't adjust out the mess, there is a chance the butterflies are too far open, after a certain throttle position the idle circuit gets taken out of the game.

Sorry I'm late to the game, been pretty busy of late. You have to play with the idle speed and the mixture screws optimizing one usually makes the other one need adjustment. You use the vaccum gauge on manifold (anywhere under the throttle plates), your jet in the water. I usually tie mine to the dock so I can play without going anywhere. I think everyone mostly covered it, but at the end of the day, you want the RPM set to where you want it, pulling the highest vaccum reading. The holley book says you want the mixture screws 1.5 turns out - I find if the main jetting is correct, you want closer to .75 to 1 turns out. If it is too far open, the idle screws will have no effect, and you need to bump the secondary idle set screw a little bit to get the primary idles working. I like to have about .003 showing of the secondary transfer slot.


I personally like my idle low so it can idle out of the docks without feeling like I'm gonna hit something. My engine idles at 700 rpm with a 246 @ .050 duration cam. I have a hand throttle, so I can bump it up when cold.

Thanks Speedy, I will take your advice and tune em in. Gonna start by turning in the idle screws to start, and out .75 to 1. See what I get from there.

With a dual plane and a 454 with a 232 duration cam - you should be able to idle at 700 rpm in the water without issue. Lower duration (actually overlap) and/or more restrictive exhaust will cause it to be able to idle lower.

My 454 in my RV idles at 350 RPM! Of course, by 3500 RPM it's all done due to the lack of camshaft overlap - but put an A4 impellor behind that engine, and it would move anything pretty damn fast I suspect...
