Your motor plate is designed for an internally balanced flywheel, which would not have a counterweight, new flex would do the same, only fix I can think of would be to cut the motor plate out where the flywheel (flexplate) is (all the way around).
 Looks installed correctly to me.

That plate is pretty thick. IMO...

I just put a new one on mine and the weights were on the outside and I had no problem....Think about it..the teeth will still be in the same spot but the weights will be out...what are they gonna hit then? I dont think they wiil hit the "bell housing" or whatever they call it on a boat....Just a thought..... :-\

Doesn't the champfer in the inside diameter fit funny? Didn't think they would work backward, could be full of crap though :-\

That would make sense, The guy i bought it from was running a stroker in it... And i cant flip the flexplate around, its designed to go one way ;D

I really dont want to cut up anything just yet ??? I would rather try to find another used engine plate to use for now and if i have to cut it.....

Next summer i will be running a internally balanced engine.  496 baby ;)

I see your issue. Your motor plate goes behind the flexplate rather than up and above it.

Get a new motor plate from BDS Machine. Billy machines his motorplates so that it goes up and above the flexplate rather than behind it, so it will work with either or (internally or externally balanced flexplates). Use your current rear motor plate to trim the new one to the correct height.

2 Sav Simply scribe a line around the outer circumferance of the flex plate or just the area that will be affected by the counter weight  Then "band saw" it out to relive it you'll be fine ( you could also have someone "mill out" a "relief' in the back surface. RE flex plate we (and lots of others ) routinely use Auto flex plates and "SFI" (heavier Drag race approved) Alot depends on if/how you engine was Balanced and what crank (interenal or external balance) Call if you need help or have questions Tom

Note 396/427 BBC'sd use "zero balance flywheel or flex plate" and dampner ,454 family are external (counterwieghted)  mark 4 & 5 are different "balance" than each other,if you inaveratanly mix these any components up the thing will shake like a "dog crappin peach seeds"  SOME aft mkt cranks for late BBC's are made with nuetral balance (edit)

I would try the shim, if you have more than .030 interference the engine probably would not want to turn over.

I think i will buy both...... This way i have a brand new flexplate ( not warped, bent or whatever) And if i don't need the shim with the new plate, i wont use it......

Dont ever flip a external flywheel around ,that puts that engine way out of balance. That weight is not centered with the dowel pin its off to one side.I did that on a balance job and thought this thing is way out and looked again and cought my f up and fliped it back, makes about 200 grams out, weight to engine.Scat wheels are good is yours SFI cert?Scribe the outline of your flexplate and cut it back to fit.

Not sure if putting a different flexplate will affect the balance since the motor was balanced to the one you currently have.

FYI most engine builders won't balance the flexplates because it affects the SFI rating if you drill/weld on them, they will balance with the plate so if its off, shouldn't be by much IMO...

Our Balancer (and lots of others) balance the rotating assy to use standard flywheel and dampners ,weighted or zero (does not balance the peripherals/externals) This is ,in part so that if a flywheel or balancer change is needed that component doesn't need rebalance.
2 Sav what is this motor ,is the balancer on it now the one that came with the motor and was this motor "balanced " . is the balancer counter weighted (use a small mirror) to look for a counter weight on the backside of the dampner Tom

This 454 came from a wrecked  tow truck....I know nothing about it  yes the balancer is counter weighted no its not the one that came with it, that one was f up badly. the rubber was coming out of it all the way around it. the flexplate did not come with it either, i dont remember where i got that from :-[ but its junk....looks to be warped and the counter weight is seperating from it

Well now i know for sure it is a bad flexplate.. I just put on the one that Pw_Tony gave me and it went from this .........(my old one)

to this......Pee Dubs flexplate

as you can see i have alot more clearance now. Check out the counter weight on this old flexplate.

See the angle of it :o Now im just going to pick up a new TCI plate......... Thanks for everyone's input ;)
