Slight white smoke/mist at idle then disapear once RPMs climb
« on: September 21, 2021, 09:11:25 AM »
I noticed I am seeing a little of bit of white smoke/mist from the through transom exhaust, mostly at idle and low RPM. I don't have a thermostat or pressure regulator for my exhaust risers. I guess what is happening is at idle some water is getting through the exhaust risers slightly and not enough exhaust pressure to keep it all out? What is the typical solution? I don't really notice the white smoke/mist when on land running on a hose. There is some water coming out of exhaust when running on a hose of course.

Of course my temperatures are all over the place since I don't have thermostat depending on lake temp/RPM/duration. Running 8 degrees at ~850 rpm, 32 (8+24 from mechanical) degrees all in at 3500rpm ford 460 packajet.

The smoke I am talking about is this right in the beginning like in this vid.

Maybe it just because it is a carb with no emissions? I just want to make sure I am not going to cause hydro lock or other issues down the road.

Looks perfectly normal.
Do you have a gate valve on the pump?

You state water temps are all over the place. What are you seeing?

With just a gate valve adjusted, mines at 130-140°F at cruise. Slightly higher in the no wake zone, maybe 150°F
This is thru logs and snails too.

This is a single pass system, lake temps affect engine temp too.
Black Canyon/Boulder Canyon, below Hoover Dam, is 55°F year round. Mohave gets to the high 80s. The river at Bullhead is consistently 65°.
T°-in/T°-out ~50/60°

No gate valve or any regulation on water inlet/exist. It is purely free-flowing according to that diagram. At idle, temps are very slow to come up if any at all. Once driving around, temps stabilize, but quickly fall when idling again. Just seems like a lot of cold/heat cycling given no regulator or thermostat at all. Engine just seems to mostly always run relatively cool.

Do I have a fuel pump issue based on videos? At idle fuel pressure fluctuates a lots, then under higher rpm maxes a little below 6psi. Mechanical Ford 460 fuel pump, diaphragm looks fine. Brand new lines, tank, water separator before pump, new in line filter between pump and carb. Brand new carb.

I am able to hit 4900rpm but after holding near that for about 20 seconds I hear a pop/probably ping and I back off. I think it starts to starve for fuel. Do I have a fuel pump issue or something else?

I am running 10 degrees at idle, 30 degrees all in at 3000rpm. Conservative for now.

New distributor, wires, plugs. Quick fuel 600 cfm marine carb new. Hardin marine 460.

Iron heads? Sounds like it needs a step up on the secondary or there is a hot spot in the combustion chamber
