If the motor has good rings, I am going to say sucked intake gasket and burning some oil....
Just a stupid armchair guess using what limited information there was...

I think it looks more like excessive idling. Or funky fuel. If you want a proper plug reading you need to do a wide open throttle and back right off and cut motor then see what they look like. Don't just kill the motor at WOT unless you want to get wet be careful and use good judgement. IMO

Maybe 100 miles of city streets a wot up my street, pulled in the drive way and killed it.
What gas?
Shell brand 91
Did it burn oil?
It's a ford......it always burns oil.
How much did it idle?
...long enough to lock the brakes and roll into the driveway almost adding another double door to the garage.

Had 30% blow by in every hole prior to re fireing the motor after it sat for two years. Pulled it out of my friends mustang to paint replace the cam/lifters 2 years ago. Slapped it back together and dropped it back in about 6 months ago but just getting back to working on it.
So the intake gasket could be plausible. He just came by and we pulled the plugs to check jetting and noticed that. So I dropped timing to 6 deg 21 locked and sent him home because he forgot his jet kit. But it ran 100 better with no bogging on the way home.

Scratch that. He just called me and it's sputtering when accelerating from stop or a cruise but nothing when he mashes on it in park

Put some timing into it and the sputter could be any number of things, starting to sound like a weak/bad plug wire though.

They were brand new plugs an the wires were seasoned for a few months prior to pulling. But the only reason for turning the timing down was to keep the heat out of it so he could drive home. Whats a good number for a 302 with 289 heads and a decent cam. And the sputter well I'm pretty sure it's because it's lean.

Why is the timing locked?
A good small block Ford number should be in the low 30's as far as WOT timing (my opinion)
Any chance you have a camshaft going rumple flatskie?
You could totally have a lean pop/sputter, I would step it up three or four jet sizes to ensure you can get it to fatten up. After checking for a horrendous vacuum leak of course..

Why is the timing locked?
-Because if you don't tighten the bolt after setting timing all sorts of funny shit happens the first time you flat foot the go pedal

OK timing locked to you means something totally different then to me...
I was thinking "locked out" meaning no mechanical or vacuum advance...
Unless this was a full on race deal, I would set the distributor up to have approx 12* of mechanical advance and about another 12* in vacuum actuated advance.
Base timing at 10 would give you a theoretical WOT advance of about 34 degrees...
Power valve?

Vac at idle in park is 14 in gear 9 ish. Has 6.5 power valve. It's also an older demon 650

jet sizes have nothing to do with idle... Just throwing it out there.

Yeah, but if the power valve has a bad diaphragm it could give off a reekey idle... ;)

You know I never thought about the main jets and reeky idle.....duh. But the pv is new. He just went through the carb and haven't got any back fires out the carb since the rebuild. But he did go from a flat cam to a new one which is larger.

Motor specs as now are a 302 Mexico block, 289 heads, comp cams high energy cam, wieand dual pane high rise, shorty headers, and a demon vac secondary 625 or 650. Don't remember. But it's an older one with out the idle ease adjustment. And the bottom end wasn't touched and has about 135-140psi in every hole.
Right now main jets were 68 and secondary were 78.

Uh, just out of curiosity, but isn't that idling vacuum a weeee bit low for vacuum secondaries to pull open? Has the secondary vac. spring been changed out to a light more reactive one? Just curious.
