I was trying to put my starter in today and it wont slide into place. I have a BBC on a 4 point mount system and it seems that the bottom part of the cone is hitting the casting of the motor mount. I am wondering if the motor has just settled down a little bit so I cant slide it in or if the motor mount casting is just off. Should I just grind the casting away a little bit or should I loosen the mount and try to lift the motor up a bit? I bought all the parts from one guy but I don't know if they were ever put together. I would appreciate any help. Thanks.

I guess it is possible to have the wrong starter drive housing, but without seeing it, who knows, GM has two basic nose styles, one has the bolts strait across one another, the other has them at about a 45* angle to each other, it would also be possible to have a different motor mount than it should with the starter flywheel combo you are trying to put together, unless someone beats me to it I will try to scare up a pic or two.
BTW a picture is worth a thousand words...

The starter housing has the two bolts at 45* angle. I was going to take pics but it was dark and I was getting frustrated. I will post some up tomorrow.

I had the same problem. But I bought an MSD starter and it has holes on the mounting plate so you can adjust the angle. But I had to grind down some of the billet starter mounting plate to fit past the bolts.

The majority of the older rear mount and bell hsg castings were not desinged for late type starters so we commonley find that the hsg its self has to be cut back Ground out or "relived" to allow proper fit and alignment of the starter Tom

Mine would not fit either...... A grinder made it fit .
it was that or a big f-ing hamer , luckily i wasn't drinking or the hamer might have been first :o

"If you Drink dont Hammer" ;D

"If you Drink dont Hammer" ;D
I had it backwards then , cause i always thought that when you drink......It's Hammer time :D

It is an older 4 point mount.
Looks like I am drinking, grinding, and then hammering tonight. Thanks guys.

I have a 460 ford in my spectra whats the best starter to put in it? also whats the diff between a marine starter and a stock starter...New to jetboats thanks for your replies...

IMHO the best way to go all the way around is to use the top mounted Delco starter if you can, otherwise there are a few gear reduction starters out there that are pretty nice.
The difference between a "Marine" starter and an "Automotive" starter is about $180 ;D j/k
The biggest part of any marine component (electrical) is eliminating the open "arc" from brushes and contacts.
Example; the Delco type starter motors have a special plate installed between the drive housing and the armature and is sealed up with sealant, the Ford Motorcraft type starter has a special bendix arm cover and is clamped then there is a special plug (crazy roll pin) in the "vent" hole in the drive housing, all designed to keep fumes from being ignited from the arc from the brushes and contacts.
They are normally tagged by a stamping or a sticker which has a SAE J1171 number on it for identification, but a regular starter or alternator can be "modified" and be "marine" legal if the generator shop knows what they are doing. We used to buy the components and build our own when I had my shop in 1996, but parts are getting so inexpensive (relitively speaking) that its getting to be a lost art...
Call Tom at JBP, he will have what you need on the shelf and can ship it to you quicker than you could get one built.

What mounts do you have Glenwood, Hardin, or something else? I have the Hardin 4 point mount on my jet and the offset bolt pattern starter, and mine fit just fine. Good thing I'm not a big person cause it was a pain in the ass to get in, but it did go in.
Yeah talk to Tom at JBP, he's the best!!!!!!! O0
Good luck
