Post by: rallison on June 13, 2013, 01:14:59 PM
hey guys, im back to try again........ i put a new 461 bbc with small dome pistons and closed chamber heads. so compression is a we bit higher. my issue is that i cant find a starter to role the motor over without grinding on the flywheel. i pulled the starter and tested it, put a new one in and non of them work..... im at a loss! anyone know of a good starter to get other than running to napa or anywhere else? :banghead:

Are you running a flex plate or a flywheel?

You will want either an iron snout conventional starter or upgrade to a gear reduced deal.

The shimming needs to be dead on for a flex plate. Also needs to be a high quality piece, no Chinese garbage.

What all have you tried?

GT-

Can the starter be shimmed 'dead-on' when the motor is still in the boat? (4pt mts, logs n snails)
I have a iron noseconed starter, flexplate was new in 07/10, starter(s), one a year) has always sounded like crap.

I've been running the DB Electrical ("cheap Chineese crap") gear reduction starter with good results.  Engine is 10.5:1.  It turns the engine over like there are no plugs in it (190-195 psi cranking pressure).

I did bend a pair of starter bolts one time.  But I've seen that happen with "high-end" starters too.  Not sure what the problem was, since the alignment and clearances were good.  The mounting bracket at the nose on these starters looks a little "light" on these things.  But they do put out the torque.

And yes, at the very least, you'll have to slip the bell housing aft so you can check the pinion-to-ring gear clearance (when engaged).  So that means removing the driveline and maybe the snails and lifting/supporting the rear of the engine.
