ok so my old stater has 1 post on the unit it self for power and a solenoisd with 4 post on the bell housing. the new starter has 4 post on the solenoid on the starter
?
how do i wire it, just run power to it, or ditch the solenoid and run new wires to the new starter??????

i was not running an aux solenoid! i had a gm 1 wire alt and that one wire from the alt went to the starter! and i had a hot from the ignition key going to one prong...now that i think about it the one wire coming from the alt went on the same post as the battery cable does...so i was only using 2 of the prongs the big one, and i want to say the little one closest to the battery cable prong

Filterbiz, sounds like your original setup was just like a Ford, using a remote solenoid(it's actually a "relay") in conjunction with a starter motor that requires just one large cable. I'm assuming the new starter has an integral solenoid, ala GM(PIC would help). Your new starter can be connected exactly the same. You just need to add one short jumper wire. Start by connecting the cable that ran to the old starter to the large terminal on the new starter's solenoid(not the one that has a cable going to the motor portion of starter) There should be two(sometimes, only one) small terminals, one marked with an "S". Make a short jumper to connect this terminal to the one you just connected the large cable to. Now, when the remote solenoid is activated it will connect the starter to battery via that large cable and the solenoid will activate via the small jumper. Would still like a pic of the new and old starters and the solenoid on the bellhousing.

I would definitely not use that diagram by Jetaholic to wire in a solenoid-type starter relay. Period!
