Title: starter on the fritz?

carnked it over, no fuel from sitting.... next time, nothing.... checked all the grounds/wires.  batt is good.  tapped the starter w/ hammer.  nothing. wtf

Get a volt meter and make confirm there is power going to the starter. If your solenoid is starting to go out, you can usually tap that part with a hammer. If there's power going to the starter and its doing nothing, its probably time for a new starter.

Do you even hear the solenoid tap?, could just be a loose/burnt wire...

If ya got pwr and Ground and its not the iggy switch it probably is the starter , pull and take it to the auto parts store , they can bench test it for you Tom
Note if its a top mount DONT leave the core there !
