Title: Starter shimming
Post by: elementbldrs on June 28, 2019, 05:58:12 AM
Ok guys,
Obvious starter was bad due to grinding sound after taking on some water a few weeks ago. Also was due for a battery so that went in as well. Replaced a stocker gym starter for the MSD DynaForce model with staggered bolt pattern. Using new bolts that came with kit.

So after install with no shins, starts great but while revving I’m getting a sharp noise as if the bendix is still engaged. So I added one by one the shims that drop starter away from block, which adjusts gear mesh. No change.

My problem is with motor installed and the Hardin bellhousing, I cant check mesh with paper clip. No access. I can barely feel that the gear is the 1/16”away from flywheel, so not sure adding that shim will help, though I can try tonight.

Thoughts on good clean sounding start, but intermittent noise once started?

I've never had any luck with other than GM starters on a big block.
Not even reman'ed napa or checkerzone crap.
The last starter I put in the boat was robbed off of my Crewcab 4x4. OEM starter, 120K miles on it. Still on the boat. (6 or 7 seasons)

Throw another shim at it and see what happens.

Ok I was able to have someone start it and actually confirmed the bendix was disengaging, yet it continued to make this hollow barking noise intermittently. So not the starter.

Time to figure out what this noise is. Never really ran it out of the water, so pretty sure it’s the jet.
